Laviolette brought fresh perspective to Predators

Monday, 01.19.2015 / 3:00 AM / 2015 NHL All-Star Weekend

Robby Stanley - NHL.com Correspondent

NASHVILLE -- Nashville Predators coach Peter Laviolette has found early success in his first season here, leading them to the best record in the NHL through the first half of the season.

Laviolette has given the Predators a new identity. They had been known as a tough defensive team since they came into the NHL in 1998-99 under coach Barry Trotz, but Laviolette has added a more aggressive offense.

"I think it's just a bit of a different style of game," Predators forward Colin Wilson said. "I think there are a lot of people here who needed a fresh start, and at the same time we signed a few people who needed fresh starts. I think the combination of all of that has been perfect. He (Laviolette) has done a great job, and I just love the mood he keeps in the dressing room. He keeps us all really focused and in-tune."

All-Star appearance rarity for Penguins' Crosby

Editor's note: Sidney Crosby withdrew from the All-Star Game on Jan. 22 due to a lower-body injury.

It would be hard to tell by simply going off Sidney Crosby's NHL All-Star Game resume that the Pittsburgh Penguins captain has been considered one of the best, if not the best player in the world, since his rookie season of 2005-06.

The 2015 Honda NHL All-Star Game on Jan. 25 (5 p.m. ET, NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports) was to be Crosby's second in his 10-year career. He played in the 2007 All-Star Game in Dallas but missed the past four in Atlanta (2008), Montreal (2009), Carolina (2011) and Ottawa (2012).

"It's not really crazy considering I missed on three chances because of the Olympics (2006, 2010, 2014) and four because of injury," Crosby said before a game last Friday against the New York Islanders. "One was a high-ankle sprain, two were concussions, and one was my knee."

Crosby then knocked on the wooden bench he was sitting on inside the visitors dressing room at Nassau Coliseum.

Crosby spoke about the upcoming 2015 NHL All-Star Weekend -- which features the 2015 NHL All-Star Fantasy Draft presented by DraftKings on Jan. 23 (8 p.m. ET, NBCSN, SN, TVA Sports), and the 2015 Honda NHL All-Star Skills Competition on Jan. 24 (7 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports) -- and some of his favorite memories of past All-Star Games:

Rangers all-star Nash returning to Columbus

Sunday, 01.18.2015 / 3:00 AM / 2015 NHL All-Star Weekend

Dan Rosen - NHL.com Senior Writer

Getting selected for the NHL All-Star Game rarely is the greatest motivator for a player. It's a good goal to have and certainly an accomplishment if achieved, but it's not what drives a player in the offseason, through training camp, or at the start of the season.

New York Rangers forward Rick Nash is usually no different, except 2015 NHL All-Star Weekend has a unique meaning for him, so the idea of getting there was more intriguing than ever before.

"I don't think I was striving for my play to be top-notch so I could go there, that definitely wasn't the issue, but it's nice," Nash said. "If there is one place where it would be fun to go to the All-Star Game it would be in Columbus."

Columbus is a special place to Nash. He was selected first in the 2002 NHL Draft by the Columbus Blue Jackets and spent the next decade of his life helping build a hockey tradition in the market and a home for himself in the city, a home he still maintains.

Nash earned his spot in the 2015 Honda NHL All-Star Game, to be played Jan. 25 at Nationwide Arena (5 p.m. ET, NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports), by playing the brand of hockey that fans in Columbus got used to over the years. He has been a factor for the Rangers all season and has 26 goals and 41 points in 42 games. He's been dominant in all areas, including on the penalty kill.

Nash, who will serve as an alternate captain for Team Toews, talked about going back to Columbus as an all-star, his favorite memory with the Blue Jackets, and his life now as a New Yorker:

Jakub Voracek started his career with the Columbus Blue Jackets, and now the Philadelphia Flyers forward will be going back to Columbus for the biggest moment of his professional career.

Voracek was picked for the 2015 Honda NHL All-Star Game, which will be played Jan. 25 at Nationwide Arena (5 p.m. ET, NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports).

When Patrick Kane joined Jonathan Toews in coach Joel Quenneville's office before practice Wednesday, he was worried something had gone awry during the Chicago Blackhawks' brief break since last playing Sunday against the Minnesota Wild.

"I thought we were in trouble," Kane said.

Quite the opposite, actually. Quenneville called the meeting to tell Toews he would be named a captain for the 2015 NHL All-Star Weekend and Kane that he would be named an assistant to captain Nick Foligno of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Toews will be joined by Ryan Getzlaf of the Anaheim Ducks and Rick Nash of the New York Rangers. Foligno and Kane will be joined by Drew Doughty of the Los Angeles Kings.

Bold jersey designs on tap for 2015 NHL All-Star Game

Friday, 01.09.2015 / 7:00 PM / 2015 NHL All-Star Weekend

Mike G. Morreale - NHL.com Staff Writer

A bold, fresh jersey design is the perfect complement to the speed and agility of those selected to play in the 2015 Honda NHL All-Star Game on Jan. 25 at Nationwide Arena in Columbus. Reebok believes it has accomplished just that with its state-of-the-art look and modern appeal in the uniforms for the participants at this year's event.

"Fans get to see their favorite players in their typical uniforms every game during the season," said Reebok uniform designer Dave Conetta. "But we wanted to do something with this uniform that made the idea of a hero coming alive."

Fans immediately will notice the green trim on each of the lightweight jerseys, regardless of whether they are the "home" blacks or "away" whites. The "elite green" color, while new to fans as a primary color, actually is in the necklines of all authentic NHL jerseys.

Predators' Laviolette, Kings' Sutter named head coaches for 2015 Honda NHL All-Star Game

Friday, 01.09.2015 / 1:23 PM / 2015 NHL All-Star Weekend

NEW YORK -- Peter Laviolette of the Nashville Predators and Darryl Sutter of the Los Angeles Kings will serve as head coaches for the 2015 Honda NHL® All-Star Game in Columbus, the National Hockey League announced today.

Under the All-Star selection process, the head coach of the team with the highest points percentage (points earned divided by total possible points) in the NHL through games of Saturday, Jan. 10 -- the halfway point of the regular season -- earns the right to lead one of the All-Star teams.

Laviolette's Predators have recorded a League-leading points percentage of .725 (27-9-4) and are assured of retaining the top spot through Saturday's games. Joining Laviolette will be members of his Nashville coaching staff.
