Finland certainly has a flair for the dramatic in the IIHF World Junior Championship.

Forward Kasperi Kapanen, chosen in the first round of the 2014 NHL Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins and later traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs, scored off a wraparound 1:33 into overtime to give Finland a 4-3 victory against Russia in the 2016 WJC at Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, Finland, on Tuesday.

It marked the second time in three years Finland celebrated a gold medal in overtime.

Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Kasperi Kapanen scored off a wraparound 1:33 into overtime to give Finland a 4-3 victory against Russia in the gold-medal game of the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship at Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, Finland, on Tuesday.

Kapanen, the 22nd pick in the 2014 NHL Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins and traded to the Maple Leafs on July 1, 2015, took a pass from Aleksi Saarela (New York Rangers) and beat Russian defenseman Sergei Boikov (Colorado Avalanche) in the right circle before curling the cage and tucking the puck just inside the left post for his second goal of the tournament.

The victory gives Finland its second gold medal in three years. Russia, which medaled for the sixth straight year, won a second straight silver medal.

Earlier Tuesday, the United States won bronze with an 8-3 win against Sweden.

Bjork and Donato are selections of the Boston Bruins in the 2014 NHL Draft, and Tkachuk is an A-rated skater on NHL Central Scouting's November players to watch list for the 2016 draft.

Host Finland won gold by defeating Russia 4-3 in overtime. Russia defeated the United States and Finland defeated Sweden in the semifinals Monday, each by 2-1 scores.

Sweden forward William Nylander was ruled out for the remainder of the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship with a head injury, the IIHF announced Sunday.

Nylander was sent back to Toronto on Sunday, according to the Toronto Star.

"William isn't 100 percent fit for playing a game, so it was an easy decision, but it took us a while to get to that point," Swedish doctor Per Adolf Bergsten told the paper.

The impact that several 2016 NHL Draft-eligible prospects have had for their respective countries at the IIHF World Junior Championship in Finland this year has been remarkable.

"It's like being a kid in a candy store," Chicago Blackhawks senior director of amateur scouting Mark Kelley told NHL.com. "Not only has the competition been top notch, but if you look at the teams and the roles that some of these players are having on those teams at the age they are, it's incredible.

"These aren't players who are on the team to gain experience; they're players who are on the team to have an impact and make a difference and we're seeing that on a nightly basis."

The semifinal round of the tournament begins Monday and features 11 players projected as A-rated prospects on NHL Central Scouting's November players to watch list for the 2016 NHL Draft. Among that group of underage performers, six are among the top seven in scoring at the tournament.

Auston Matthews and Jesse Puljujarvi were among the most talked about players entering the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship. Their runs at tournament history have drawn even more attention.

Matthews, projected to be the top pick of the 2016 NHL Draft, had a hat trick in the United States' 7-0 defeat of the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals.

His goal late in the first period gave the U.S. a 3-0 lead. Midway through the second period he one-timed a pass from Nick Schmaltz, a Chicago Blackhawks prospect, for a power-play goal to make it 5-0. And 24 seconds into the third period he completed the hat trick with a hard, low shot from the center of Czech zone for another power-play goal to make it 6-0.

He leads the tournament with seven goals, and with two games to go he's one behind Jeremy Roenick's U.S. record of eight goals in 1989. The other U.S. players with seven goals in one WJC are Mark Green (1978), Scott Young (1987), Peter Ferraro (1993), Chris Bourque (2006) and Johnny Gaudreau (2013).

Canada is in an odd position entering the quarterfinals of the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship in Helsinki, Finland.

No nation has had more success than Canada at the annual under-20 international tournament, winning gold 16 times, including at the 2015 WJC. The next closest team is Russia with 13 golds.

But after two losses in the preliminary round for the first time since 1998, Canada enters its first game of the knockout round against host Finland on Saturday at Hartwall Arena in Helsinki as the underdog.

"We're major underdogs, I think," defenseman Joe Hicketts, a Detroit Red Wings prospect, said according to TSN.

Canada coach Dave Lowry said: "[Finland] would definitely be the favorite, I would have to say. It's going to be a challenge."
