Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic - Maple Leafs vs. Red Wings

Yzerman to join Red Wings for Alumni Showdown

NHL.com

Legendary Detroit Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman will play in the 2013 Alumni Showdown at Comerica Park as part of the 2013 SiriusXM Hockeytown Winter Festival, the team announced Tuesday.

"It’s a big event, and I really feel it’s a great celebration of the history not only of the Red Wings, but of the [Toronto Maple Leafs] as well," Yzerman told NHL Network. "And obviously playing in Detroit for such a long time, I thought it was appropriate to be a part of that."

Yzerman, the captain of the Red Wings from 1986 to 2006, was the biggest name remaining that had not committed to playing in the alumni game between the Red Wings and Maple Leafs, which will take place on Dec. 31, the day before the 2014 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic between the same two teams.

"Steve is one of the greatest Red Wings players ever," said Ken Holland, the Red Wings general manager. "His presence at the Alumni Showdown makes a great day even better."

The latest edition features Darryl Sittler, a former Toronto Maple Leafs forward and member of the Hockey Hall of Fame:

TORONTO -- Nearly 38 years ago as a player for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Darryl Sittler scored 10 points in a game against the Boston Bruins, setting an NHL record for most points in a single game that has stood the test of time.

Nowadays, Sittler is trying to have an influence off the ice as a community representative for the Maple Leafs, and his job is a heck of a lot easier than it was a few years ago.

Draper, Clark excited to play in Alumni Showdown

Jon Lane - NHL.com Staff Writer

It was during the mid-1990s when the Detroit Red Wings transformed the Motor City into "Hockeytown."

Between 1991 and 1996, the Red Wings finished in first place in four out of five seasons, including a franchise-best 62-13-7 record in 1995-96. The only problem was the Wings were unable to hit that high note. That '95-'96 team lost in the Western Conference Final to the Colorado Avalanche, one year getting swept in four games by the New Jersey Devils in the 1995 Stanley Cup Final.

Although the Red Wings were devoid of a Stanley Cup since 1955, hockey nevertheless exploded onto the Detroit scene. The Red Wings weren't a one-year wonder that faded away, and finally hit pay dirt in 1996-97 when they plowed through the Western Conference and swept the Philadelphia Flyers to win their elusive Cup.
