WINNIPEG -- Winnipeg and its new NHL club would love to celebrate the seemingly daily announcements, but the braintrust is too buried in work at the moment to pause for celebration.

Major announcements have bombarded Winnipeg over the past three weeks, so residents could be excused for taking them in stride by now. Three weeks ago, boisterous gatherings across Winnipeg greeted the news that the NHL intended to return to Manitoba.

On Tuesday, when the League Board of Governors approved the sale of the Atlanta Thrashers to Winnipeg-based True North Sports and Entertainment, the hockey club and Winnipeggers calmly checked off another task on the civic to-do list.

"I think the fans took their cue from us," said Scott Brown, director of corporate communications and hockey operations for True North Sports and Entertainment.

Winnipeg to make major announcement

Wednesday, 06.08.2011 / 12:54 PM / Winnipeg NHL Franchise

The new Winnipeg NHL team has scheduled a press conference for 3 p.m. ET Wednesday, where it is expected to make what is being called a "significant hockey operations announcement".

The announcement to be held in Winnipeg's MTS Centre, will likely be another major step as the franchise sets up operations for its inaugural season in the Manitoba capital.

The franchise, formerly known as the Atlanta Thrashers, was recently bought by True North Sports & Entertainment and is being moved to Winnipeg pending approval by the Board of Governors on June 21. The move was also contingent on the franchise's ability to sell 13,000 season tickets after the announcement, a goal the organization met 17 minutes after tickets went on sale to the general public on June 4.

The upcoming season will mark the return of NHL hockey to Winnipeg for the first time in 15 years.
