There are still two conferences, but the number of divisions has been reduced to four. For the first time since 2004, all 30 teams will face each other home and away.

Here's a look at some of the more interesting scheduling aspects:

There's nothing like the arrival of the new NHL schedule to remind us that summer doesn't last forever. The 2013-14 schedule marks the first under the new two-conference, four-division setup that will move the Detroit Red Wings and Columbus Blue Jackets to the Eastern Conference. There also will be a return to scheduling inter-conference games to ensure that all 30 teams play in all 30 arenas at least once.

There will be a break in February to accommodate the League's participation in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, and the Winter Classic between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs on Jan. 1, 2014, will be the first of a record six outdoor games -- including three in a five-day span in the final week of January.

Here are 10 of the 1,230 games on the 2013-14 schedule with some of the best potential storylines:

The release of the 2013-14 regular-season schedule Friday included the debut of the four new division names for the realigned NHL.

The League went to a realigned format for geographic purposes and has decided to stick with geographic names for the four new divisions. Three of the four names are carryovers from the old six-division alignment, but the League added a new name to the mix.

The four division names are Atlantic, Metropolitan, Central and Pacific. The Atlantic and Metropolitan divisions make up the Eastern Conference and each division has eight teams. The Central and Pacific divisions make up the Western Conference and have seven teams in each division.

It's the most wonderful time of the year.

Sixteen teams begin a pursuit of the most prestigious trophy in all of sports this week, as the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs get under way with three games Wednesday night.

The postseason begins with one of the fiercest rivalries in the sport, as the Pittsburgh Penguins host the Philadelphia Flyers at the Consol Energy Center. A healthy Sidney Crosby (37 points in 22 regular-season games) leads the Pens, who have home-ice advantage as the No. 4 seed after finishing five points ahead of the Flyers in the standings.

NBC Sports Network to air Caps-Lightning

Sunday, 04.01.2012 / 11:00 PM / Schedule

The Washington Capitals have their playoff fate in their own hands, and they can move closer to locking up the last playoff berth in the Eastern Conference on Monday night.

The Caps take a two-point lead on Buffalo into their game at Tampa Bay, one of just two on the NHL schedule. Washington blew a 2-0 lead against Montreal on Saturday but won 3-2 in a shootout to move two points clear of the Sabres. Tampa Bay, playing its final home game of the season, has won four of its last six and comes into this one after Steven Stamkos' single-season record fifth overtime goal of the season gave the Lightning a 3-2 win against Winnipeg.

It's hard to walk into that locker room and look those guys in the eye when they've played -- clearly, that was our best game we've played in the series -- and I thought we deserved a better fate tonight.
