League to test curved glass at player benches

TORONTO -- The area by the player benches where the padded turnbuckle used to be should be safer this coming season thanks to its sleek new look.

After hundreds of hours of testing that included the use of crash-test dummies, the NHL has developed a curved-glass system that will replace the padded turnbuckles, which were set on the stanchions at the end of each player bench.

The curved glass flows from the glass above the boards and runs away from the ice. It is designed to eliminate the solid termination point that used to be in place due to the 90-degree angle that was created by the two sections of glass coming together at the end of each player bench.

Return of RDO camp allows League to experiment

School will be back in session beginning Wednesday in Etobicoke, Ont. as the National Hockey League gathers its top professors and prospective freshmen for another Research, Development and Orientation Camp in order to test potential changes to the game ranging from the subtle variety to the more drastic kind.

For instance, if you want to know how today's game would play if the trapezoids behind the nets were erased, then you'll want to pay attention to the news coming out of the two-day research camp being held at the MasterCard Centre for Hockey Excellence.

Thirty-six of the top prospects available for the 2012 Entry Draft will act as test pilots in the NHL's experiments next Wednesday and Thursday. The last two Jack Adams Award winners -- Pittsburgh's Dan Bylsma and Phoenix's Dave Tippett -- will serve as coaches for the teenagers.

RDO camp gives teams early look at 2012 prospects

Belleville Bulls goaltender Malcolm Subban got a preview of the 2012 NHL Scouting Combine by making a short visit to the Toronto hotel that hosts the annual event.

While he didn't meet any NHL scouts or general managers during that trip last month, he'll certainly get a chance to see them at the NHL's Research, Development and Orientation Camp, to be held Aug. 16-17 at the MasterCard Centre for Hockey Excellence in Etobicoke, Ont.

Thirty-six of the top prospects available for the 2012 Entry Draft were invited to the camp. Subban is one of four goaltenders that will be participating; also attending will be Daniel Altshuller, who plays for the Nepean Raiders of the Central Canadian Hockey League, Chris Driedger of the Calgary Hitmen and Collin Olsen of the U.S. National Team Development Program.

NEW YORK/TORONTO – Thirty-six of the top-rated players eligible for the 2012 NHL Entry Draft have accepted invitations to participate in the 2011 NHL Research, Development and Orientation Camp, August 17 and 18, the National Hockey League announced today.

Participating players were selected by NHL Central Scouting and rank high on the 2012 Futures Lists.  The talented group of skaters and goaltenders from the Canadian Hockey League, USHL, United States colleges and Canadian Provincial League will show off their playing skills to general managers and talent evaluators from around the League in a unique best-on-best setting that commences their Draft-eligible seasons.

If it's true that the best teachers make the best students, than the top players from the 2012 Entry Draft class will be pulling top marks this season.

The last two winners of the Jack Adams Award as NHL coach of the year -- Dan Bylsma of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Dave Tippett of the Phoenix Coyotes -- will be in charge when the 2011 NHL Research Development and Orientation Camp is held Aug. 17-18 at the MasterCard Centre for Hockey Excellence, in Etobicoke, Ont.
