Dundas used slogan to help win Kraft Hockeyville nod

What do Kraft Dinners and hockey have to do with each other? Kraft Dinners, known north of the border as KD, is the Canadian name for Kraft Macaroni and Cheese -- but more important, it was an integral part of Dundas, Ontario's, successful Kraft Hockeyville campaign.

Sitting with their web design team, co-chairs Barry Forth and Leslie Watson were trying to come up with colors and a theme for their Kraft Hockeyville bid and campaign. They decided to stick with yellow and blue, the colors of their minor hockey association teams, the Dundas Blues. It was at that point that Forth came up with what turned into a brilliant idea.

"It just kind of dawned on me that the most recognizable Kraft product is Kraft Dinner, in my mind the most recognizable Kraft product, and it happens to be the same color scheme as the (town hockey teams') blue and yellow," said Forth. "I thought of the slogan 'Gotta be KD,' and I thought, why don't we do 'Gotta be Dundas.' Right away it was perfect, and anybody we told it to loved it. It got to the point where our minor hockey teams were using that as a chant before games."

The puck drops in Kraft Hockeyville 2010 in less than a week -- and after 11 months of hard work the community of Dundas, Ont., is set to go.

"It's sunk in and it will be nice when everything is really starting to happen, because even right now it's all such a blur," said Barry Forth, co-chairman of the Dundas Kraft Hockeyville bid. "To say that it's been a lot of work I think is the understatement of the year. I thought it was a lot of work from November to April for our community effort, and then now this and all the planning, the execution of all that's going to be happening. It's a big chore, but I love doing it. It's a lot of fun, no complaints from anybody."

Dundas, population 24,700 and part of the city of Hamilton since 2001, is the home of the J.L. Grightmire Arena, known to the locals as the Market Street Arena. On Sept. 28, the rink will host the Buffalo Sabres and the Ottawa Senators in preseason action. The arena also received $100,000 in prize money from Kraft Canada, which has already been put to good use.
