RALEIGH -- Fans at RBC Center were treated to a 10-minute laser-and-video show starring all 30 NHL Guardians during the second intermission of the 2011 All-Star Game presented by Discover.
Comics legend Stan Lee, who was the force behind The Guardian Project, introduced the sellout crowd to the Guardians and provided background into their history and super powers.
But things turned dangerous after the Guardians were unveiled, as the evil force out to destroy the Guardians known as Devin Dark interrupted and took control of the show. The Guardians appeared outside the arena on the big board, only to be sucked into the building by a devious device and trapped under the ice.
The Blue is quiet, reserved and mysterious. He's the guy that sits in the back corner of any room, blending in with his surroundings. Though he is the coolest of the Guardians, he could care less what others think. Like many of the Guardians, The Blue is deeply influenced by music and his preferred style is obvious although his connection to it goes much deeper. In look, the Blue's only visible features on his face are two glowing yellow eyes.
The Duck is one of the younger Guardians. Although he hails from a wealthy family and is a rebel with a trust fund, he has undergone Marine training and is as tough as nails. Calm in all situations, his relaxed attitude should not be mistaken for weakness because when the time to fight arises, few Guardians are more prepared than the Duck.
The Ranger is the vigilant protector of Manhattan. He never sleeps, and therefore is a regular in Manhattan's late night scene, although you're much more likely to find him in a neighborhood joint than at a trendy nightclub. His personality is as big as the city he protects, but like most New Yorkers there is humility to his bravado. There's a multi-cultural feel to him that's directly related to the many different nationalities that inhabit the world's most populated island.
The Panther is all South Beach fun and youthful exuberance. What would you expect from a character that routinely drinks from the fountain of youth? The other Guardians are constantly on him to take things a little more seriously, but to no avail. He's the one used to spending his days hanging out at the beach and nights hitting up the hottest clubs in the world.
The Senator is a descendent of the Roman God Jupiter (the God of Thunder), who is the father of Mars, who in turn, is the father of Romulus and Remus (the legendary founders of Rome). The Senator loves action and could never subject himself to a life without risk.
The Maple Leaf is the largest of all the Guardians. A fact made more obvious when he "grows" infinitely larger as the need arises. His body is composed entirely of wood; essentially he is a living breathing maple tree. Large roots that shoot from his feet enable him to secure himself to any surface by penetrating and forming a foothold. His branches can stretch from his forearms allowing him to snatch up the enemy or grasp innocent victims in harm’s way. He fires sticky "sap" bombs from his fingertips that trap his opponents like an insect in amber.
The Coyote is a drifter and he is happiest when wandering the desert country he calls home. The Coyote is human in appearance with a noticeably feral attitude. He has extremely long retractable claws on his hands and a set of teeth with unusually sharp canines. His outfit is reminiscent of a mysterious plains drifter complete with a huge duster that flows behind him as he moves. He possesses the power of summoning in that he can bring forth a pack of coyotes from the void in his coat. He can also fire cactus quills from inside his coat as well. He has the power to conjure up the spirits of the earth and his ancestors in order to get advice as well as to get help when needed.
Like Texas itself, The Star's personality is BIG. Everything about him oozes with confidence. He's the horse everybody came to see and he relishes the opportunity to prove his greatness. You could say there is another side to him but there just isn't. His confidence is so severe that it could almost be considered a superpower all by itself. When engaging his enemies, the Star lets them know who is boss immediately with his catch phrase "There's a new Sheriff in town."
The Flame is deeply affected by the people of Calgary - he has a strong sense of pride in his city and he takes his position as a representative of Calgary very seriously. As a result of Calgary being a young city, and one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse cities in Canada, the Flame has a personality that is multifaceted. One of the Flame's favorite hobbies is snow skiing, which is ironic considering he's comprised primarily of fire. He has a true passion for hockey, which leads him to be an ambassador for the sport.
You get the right the whistles at the right times, you can leave him out there. He's a beast when it comes to being on the ice. I thought [Saturday] he was a big man. That first period, he did that lateral cut and it was like three bowling pins bounced off him. There's not too many guys that can do that.
