Weekes chooses best goalie in each team's history

Tuesday, 12.15.2015 / 3:00 AM / Game Savers

Kevin Weekes - NHL Network Analyst

NHL Network analyst Kevin Weekes, in conjunction with the new Canada Post goaltender stamp series, provides his insight into the position he played for 11 seasons in the League.

In the last piece of the Game Savers series, Weekes gives his top goalie in each team's history.

We've saved the best for last. In the final Game Savers piece, we get all 30 teams involved and name the best goalie who has played for each.

After much thought, deliberation and, in some cases, personal firsthand experiences having played against a lot of these guys, it wasn't easy. It was a very thought-provoking exercise, but in the end, these are my choices for the all-time best goalie for each of the current franchises in the NHL.

Some picks were no-brainers. Others, I couldn't come up with a definitive answer.

Let the debates begin.

Weekes: Joseph, Belfour, Moog among best masks

This week, Weekes discusses the best goalie masks he's seen, past or present.

Not only did the mask that Montreal Canadiens goalie Jacques Plante wore in 1959 protect his face, it paved the way for goalie masks, which have become an iconic part of our game.

Plante was the first goalie to wear a mask, although it was quite plain. Each mask is a great canvas and an opportunity for a goalie to be able to show their artistic and creative sides in some ways that are personal to them.

Goalies have put their spins on different designs, whether it was a play on their nickname or had something to do with the team they were playing for, and there have been tons of great masks over the past 60-plus seasons.

Weekes: Condon, Raanta among game's best backups

This week, Weekes discusses the best backup goalies in the League.

How important are backup goalies? Last season Scott Darling was 3-1-0 with a 2.21 goals-against average and a. 936 save percentage in five games during the Stanley Cup Playoffs and was a key contributor to the Chicago Blackhawks' championship when Corey Crawford was struggling.

And when Henrik Lundqvist missed nearly two months because of a vascular injury in his neck, Cam Talbot kept them afloat, going 16-4-3 with a 2.16 GAA, a .929 save percentage and two shutouts in 23 games and helping them win the Presidents' Trophy.

Weekes: These goalies belong in Hall of Fame

This week, Weekes discusses the best goalies eligible for the Hockey Hall of Fame who have not yet been voted in.

With the Hockey Hall of Fame inductions a few weeks ago, it got me thinking. Which goalies should be in the Hall of Fame who are eligible? Dominik Hasek was enshrined in 2014, and Ed Belfour in 2011. They are the only two goalies elected in the past nine years, since Patrick Roy in 2006.

I know there can only be a maximum of four players voted in each year, so it's tough, but there are goalies deserving of the honor, and I'm hoping they get in soon.

Here's my list of the four goalies I think should be enshrined in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto:

Weekes: Hasek's 70-save performance best ever

This week, Weekes discusses the best individual goaltending performances.

There have been many great performances by goaltenders during the regular season and in the Stanley Cup Playoffs that would classify them as Game Savers. Although I can't include them all here, after much thought, here are what I believe to be the five best goalie performances of all time:

Weekes: Penguins' Fleury continues to thrive

We're more than a month into the NHL season and we've seen some goalies dominate. Some are the usual suspects, among the League leaders each season, and others have been surprises.

So who's been the most valuable Game Saver so far this season? It's not 2015 Vezina Trophy winner Carey Price, who has played well but is injured. It's also not either of the runners up (Devan Dubnyk, Pekka Rinne).

In my opinion, it's a guy who's been one of the most consistent goalies for the past decade but doesn't get the respect that other guys get: Marc-Andre Fleury.

Kevin Weekes lists best goalies to never win Cup

Kevin Weekes - NHL Network Analyst

NHL Network analyst Kevin Weekes, in conjunction with the new Canada Post goaltender stamp series, provides his insight into the position he played for 11 seasons in the League.

This week, Weekes discusses the best goaltenders to have never won the Stanley Cup.

All of these guys have changed the game in their own way.

Every one of them was great in their own way and have left and continue to leave legacies on the game. Every one of them wants to win the Cup. Two of the three are still active as players and are hoping to one day be removed from this list.

Here are the three best goalies in my opinion to never have won the Stanley Cup:

Curtis Joseph: What I like about him is his story. Joseph was undrafted, went to the University of Wisconsin and was awesome there. He was signed by the St. Louis Blues and was amazingly fun to watch, especially those years where they had those playoff series against the Toronto Maple Leafs. I remember seeing signs "Only God makes more saves than Joseph." Joseph was fun, dynamic, acrobatic, athletic, entertaining and a great competitor.

Price vs. Dryden among Weekes' dream matchups

This week, Weekes discusses goaltenders who played in different generations he wishes he could have seen play against one another.

It's always fun to think about how athletes in different eras would have fared against each other. Think about how cool it would have been to see Babe Ruth face Clayton Kershaw, or Wilt Chamberlain and Michael Jordan going 1-on-1.

Well, there are plenty of those matchups I would like to have seen on the ice involving goalies. In each of the three fantasy meetings that intrigue me, the goalies have a connection to one another.

Kevin Weekes builds the ideal NHL goaltender

NHL Network analyst Kevin Weekes, in conjunction with the new Canada Post goaltender stamp series, provides his insight into the position he played for 11 seasons in the League.

This week, Weekes discusses what the ideal NHL goalie would look like.

There have been hundreds of goalies to play in the NHL. I was fortunate to play against a lot of guys that I idolized, with tons of guys that I admired and respect, and also see it through the unique perspective of a longtime NHL goalie and now the lead analyst on NHL Network.

People always ask me who the best goalie is of all time. My immediate answer would be Martin Brodeur or Dominik Hasek. But I'm a creative guy so I like to get creative.

That being said, this would be my ultimate goalie:

Weekes: Five best goalies I played against

This week, Weekes discusses the best goalies he played against.

I played in the NHL for 11 seasons with seven different teams, the Florida Panthers, Vancouver Canucks, New York Islanders, Tampa Bay Lightning, Carolina Hurricanes, New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils.

I got to face some of the game's best during that time, from 1997-2009. There were guys at the tail end of their careers who won the Stanley Cup, others who were just starting to become great and some in the prime of their legendary careers. It wasn't easy coming up with this list, but after careful consideration, here are the five best goalies I played against:
