Analysis: Drouin must focus on earning role in Tampa

Tuesday, 01.05.2016 / 3:48 PM / NHL Insider

Dan Rosen - NHL.com Senior Writer

Tampa Bay Lightning forward Jonathan Drouin reported to Syracuse of the American Hockey League on Tuesday. The only thing he needs to do now is try to play well enough to get himself back to the Lightning so he can try to earn his playing time in the NHL.

If Drouin focuses on anything else, particularly his ill-timed and ill-advised trade request, he'd be doing himself and his team a disservice.

Drouin's trade request, made public Sunday by his agent, Allan Walsh, is an unnecessary and impatient move from a player who still has a lot to prove in the NHL, a player who has scored six goals in 89 games and has 19 shots on goal in 19 games this season.

Judging by those numbers, the Lightning shouldn't have to justify sending a struggling 20-year-old player to the AHL to find his game. It should be as obvious as the fact that if the Lightning traded Drouin now, they wouldn't get near the return on their investment as they should.

NHL-leading Stars dealing with first dose of adversity

NEW YORK -- The Dallas Stars reached the halfway point of the season atop the NHL standings, but also dealing with a small dose of what's mostly eluded them: adversity.

It's been an impressive season in Dallas. The Stars' 28-9-4 record is the second-best in their history after 41 games, behind only the 1998-99 team (27-7-7) that won the Stanley Cup. Barring a Texas-sized collapse, the Stars will make the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the second time in eight seasons and should stand a good chance of escaping the Western Conference First Round for the first time since 2007-08.

However, Dallas enters its game Tuesday against the New York Rangers (7 p.m. ET; FS-SW+, MSG+) at Madison Square Garden challenged physically and mentally. The Stars are 2-2-2 in their past six games, and their 6-5 loss to the New York Islanders on Sunday, one night after a 3-2 overtime defeat at the New Jersey Devils, marked the first time this season they've lost consecutive games.

Goals by Panthers' Jagr just as thrilling in Spanish

Jaromir Jagr's goals are exciting in any language.

The Florida Panthers' 43-year-old forward scored his 734th and 735th NHL goals in the Panthers' 2-1 win Sunday against the Minnesota Wild, and Arley Londoño of the Panthers Radio Network captured it perfectly for 1210 ESPN Deportes.

Taking a page from the book of legendary soccer announcer Andres Cantor, Londoño let out a loud and extended "Goal!" call after Jagr scored 27 seconds into the game.

Coyotes' Doan one goal shy of franchise record

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- On Nov. 14, 1995, 19-year-old rookie Shane Doan was sitting on the bench in Winnipeg Arena during a game between his Jets and the Chicago Blackhawks.

Doan was 17 games and two periods into his NHL career, and seriously assessing whether he was in the right place.

"We were losing 4-2, and I was terrible," Doan said. "I remember sitting on the bench questioning if I could play (in the NHL). I had gone 17 games without a goal. Confidence was pretty low."

Doan jumped out for his next shift and suddenly was rushing up the ice all alone against two Chicago defensemen, future Hockey Hall of Fame member Chris Chelios and future U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame member Gary Suter.

Doan cut across the blue line and took a half-slap shot against the grain that hit the post behind another Hockey Hall of Fame member, goalie Ed Belfour, and caromed into the net.

"I wasn't very excited because we were still down 4-3 and there was only about five minutes left," Doan said. "But Teemu Selanne scored with 18 seconds left to tie the game."

Doan finished the game with his second NHL goal, in overtime, and his questions were answered once and for all.

"It was OK to get excited then," he said.

Eichel, Bennett continue to adjust to pro game

Tuesday, 12.29.2015 / 3:00 AM / NHL Insider

Mike G. Morreale - NHL.com Staff Writer

One of the toughest challenges for any NHL rookie is maintaining a high level of consistency against bigger and stronger players on a nightly basis and over an entire season.

Buffalo Sabres center Jack Eichel and Calgary Flames left wing Sam Bennett are discovering it's tough to duplicate the success they each had at the collegiate and junior hockey level, respectively, in the best League in the world. It hasn't discouraged them, but each knows patience and a little persistence will pay off in the end.

It isn't as though Eichel or Bennett are struggling this season. Rather, it's more of an adjustment period.

Fifteen top moments from 2015, from Classic to Cup

Thursday, 12.24.2015 / 3:00 AM / NHL Insider

Dan Rosen - NHL.com Senior Writer

There was a memorable finish to a memorable event. There was a golden night in Toronto, hilarious moments in Columbus, classic finishes to the regular season, and far more drama on and off the ice during the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

One player dominated like few have before while another from the same team donated like none before. Another "Next One" arrived in the NHL while a current all-star did something no one has done in 23 years.

It was another good year in the NHL in 2015, with great stories, defining moments, comebacks and loud noises, history and maybe even a dynasty.

Celebrate the holiday season with the top 15 moments of 2015, listed in chronological order:

Playoff loss led Subban to become hospital benefactor

Thursday, 12.24.2015 / 3:00 AM / NHL Insider

Arpon Basu - Managing Editor LNH.com

MONTREAL -- When the Tampa Bay Lightning eliminated the Montreal Canadiens from the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs, it was hard to imagine anything positive coming out of it for this city.

In the Montreal dressing room in Tampa following a 4-1 loss in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Second Round, Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban was upset and wasn't hiding it.

Subban spoke at length about the frustration he felt with the Canadiens' inability to score at the most important time of the season and the urgency required to take advantage of their window to end the longest Stanley Cup drought in their history.

It was not a time of joy. Not for Subban nor his teammates, and definitely not back in Montreal.

Nobody knew then how important that loss would turn out to be. Subban didn't. The residents of Montreal didn't. Least of all, Marie-Josée Gariépy didn't.
