With the midway point of the 2010-11 NHL season officially behind us, it's time to provide fantasy hockey fans with our second modification of the top-50 overall fantasy rankings. Our original rankings came during the preseason, and then we gave an updated set at the quarter-point of the season. In both of our previous rankings, Alex Ovechkin was ranked as the top fantasy player. Obviously a lot has changed in the past 20 games, and to no surprise, so have our rankings.
This deep into the season, we clearly are aware of players that have proven legit (Tim Thomas, Dustin Byfuglien, Brandon Dubinsky) and players that are just in line for a down season (sorry Ilya Kovalchuk owners, but 25 goals seems like the ceiling for the underachieving forward). Obviously we still have a full half-season of action ahead of us and things can change, but for now this is how we see the top-50 fantasy players.

With the official midway point of the 2010-11 season here, it's time to hand out our first-half fantasy awards. We've seen numerous surprises this season, but we also still see plenty of our usual suspects leading the way in fantasy leagues.
Last year it was Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby battling it out for the top fantasy rank at season's end. This season, Sid the Kid still remains at the top, but instead of Ovi, it's Steven Stamkos trying to chase down the top fantasy spot at the end of the first half.

It's been almost two months since we last analyzed the almighty center position in fantasy hockey. And since then, our top two players certainly remain the same: Sidney Crosby and Steven Stamkos. In fact, those two players are the No. 1 and No. 2 overall fantasy ranked players in standard Yahoo! Leagues. As usual there is plenty of talent to be found among the League's centermen, and although there have been some critical injuries of late (think Datsyuk, Getzlaf, Spezza, Roy), you shouldn't fret too much if you've lost a player -- there is tons of depth to grab off waivers.

Holiday Special: Fantasy predictions for the New Year

Back in preseason we provided hockey fans with 30 outrageous fantasy predictions -- one for each team. Most of those predictions were based on instinct or a hunch, but regardless, they were things we thought could happen this season. And because they were such extreme predictions, we were obviously off on a few of them.
Is Zach Parise going to become the first 50-goal scorer in Devils history and rank as the top overall fantasy player this season? Definitely not. But it wasn't our fault he got hurt. Who knows, if he stayed healthy he could have eventually found his game and injected life into the Devils, or maybe not. But you could say we were off on that forecast. Jason Spezza is not going to record 100 points, especially now that he's injured, but even before that, he was obviously not reaching that hefty expectation -- that'll be the last time we believe in Spezza's talent. There were other missed predictions as well, but we won't recap all of them.

In this edition of the Fantasy Five, we'll take a glance at the NHL's top-50 fantasy defensemen. We finally have a new No. 1, showing our commitment and faith in the young gun Dustin Byfuglien. We were hesitant to give him the top spot after only a month of action, but 30-plus games into the season is a different story, and we're fully confident Byfuglien deserves the honor.
