Flames eager to build on success from last season

Tuesday, 10.06.2015 / 5:54 PM / 2015 Molson Canadian NHL Face-Off

CALGARY -- The narrative around the Calgary Flames has changed dramatically in 12 months.

One year ago, the Flames were among the teams expected to be near the bottom of the NHL standings and contend for a lottery pick. But on the eve of the 2015-16 season, expectations are that Calgary can contend for the Pacific Division title and make another run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

That is the power of a 97-point performance last season and a trip to the second round of the playoffs for the first time in 11 years.

The Flames are ready to pick up right where they left off. The quest begins Wednesday when Calgary hosts the 2015 Molson Canadian NHL Face-Off, an all-day hockey festival before the Flames open their season at Scotiabank Saddledome against the Vancouver Canucks (10 p.m. ET; Sportsnet, TVA Sports 2).

The organization is pumped up for the new season.

Canadiens pit continuity against new-look Maple Leafs

Tuesday, 10.06.2015 / 4:00 PM / 2015 Molson Canadian NHL Face-Off

Arpon Basu - Managing Editor LNH.com

MONTREAL -- The Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs will raise the curtain on the 2015-16 NHL season Wednesday at Air Canada Centre on opposite ends of the team-building spectrum.

The Maple Leafs offseason was defined by change, as it should be for a team that finished 27th in the overall standings last season. The expectations in Toronto are modest, looking to take the first step on what appears to be a long journey back toward the Stanley Cup Playoffs and, eventually, the franchise's first Stanley Cup since 1967.

The Canadiens, on the other hand, sought continuity, making minimal personnel changes and looking to build on three straight playoff appearances by adding a fourth, one they can legitimately hope will end with new captain Max Pacioretty raising the Stanley Cup.

The contrast between the NHL's two oldest and most iconic franchises is striking, and it will be on full display Wednesday (7 p.m. ET; SN, TVA Sports) as the Maple Leafs look to establish the type of team identity the Canadiens already seemingly have.

Sixteen familiar faces in new places for 2015-16

Tuesday, 10.06.2015 / 3:00 AM / 2015 Molson Canadian NHL Face-Off

Dan Rosen - NHL.com Senior Writer

NHL.com continues its preview of the 2015-16 season, which begins Wednesday.

Peter Laviolette and Barry Trotz are linked now and forever because the former replaced the latter as the Nashville Predators coach last season. What happened benefitted the Predators and Trotz's new team, the Washington Capitals. Laviolette, the second coach in Predators history after Trotz's 15 seasons there, brought the Predators to the Stanley Cup Playoffs with 104 points. Trotz guided the Capitals to 101 points and a playoff spot.

Neither the Predators nor the Capitals made the playoffs in the previous season. If they had, Trotz and Laviolette likely wouldn't have their link. Instead, they made immediate impacts in their new places last season.

Eight potential breakout players in 2015-16

Dan Rosen - NHL.com Senior Writer

NHL.com continues its preview of the 2015-16 season, which begins Wednesday.

One year ago, the Tampa Bay Lightning were hoping forward Nikita Kucherov could have a breakout season, prove his skill could translate in the NHL, that he was worth the tough love he was shown during his rookie season of 2013-14.

At the same time, the Calgary Flames were hoping center Sean Monahan could build on his strong rookie season to bust out in a big way, and the Detroit Red Wings were banking on Tomas Tatar to become a go-to scorer in his second full season.

All three answered.

The top of the ring has "Stanley Cup Champions" around the Blackhawks logo; the left side commemorates their six Cup titles; and the right side features Chicago’s secondary logo and the player’s name and number.

The ring was created by Jostens.

The Blackhawks begin defense of their third championship in six seasons Wednesday when they host the New York Rangers (8 p.m. ET; NBCSN).
