Zane Gothberg turned aside 23 shots, while Austin Cangelosi and Tony Cameranesi each had a goal and one assist Saturday as the U.S. Junior Select Team earned a 4-0 victory against Sweden in the bronze medal game of the 2011 World Junior A Challenge in Langley, B.C.

Gothberg, drafted in the sixth round (No. 165) by the Boston Bruins in 2010, made eight saves in both the second and third periods. The U.S. team held the Swedes without a goal despite handing them five power-play opportunities in the game. Gothberg, currently starring for the Fargo Force of the United States Hockey League, will play for North Dakota next fall.

REGINA, Sask. -- There is a saying that rain, sleet or heavy snow never will keep an NHL scout from fulfilling his obligations.

For the crew at NHL Central Scouting, that's certainly the case.

"We're getting paid to watch hockey. Does it get any better?" NHL Central Scouting's Chris Edwards told NHL.com.

Goalie Jared Rutledge (2012 eligible) finished with 24 saves, including seven in the third.

Scouts will flock to see strong USNTDP class

Friday, 11.11.2011 / 12:16 PM / 2012 NHL Draft

Mike G. Morreale - NHL.com Staff Writer

In the eyes of NHL Central Scouting's David Gregory, there will need to be numerous viewings of the players skating for the U.S. National Team Development Program's under-18 team in order to project how they ultimately will be slotted on NHL Central Scouting's final ranking of North American skaters for the 2012 NHL Draft.

"There's going to be a lot of kids that'll make the draft board off of this team," Gregory told NHL.com. "In what round they fall is still up in their air. These players are really going to push each other along, so it's going to be fun to watch all season. The team is very deep and they can roll four lines out there and never stop coming."

USNTDP celebrates 15th anniversary this season

Friday, 11.11.2011 / 12:06 PM / 2012 NHL Draft

Mike G. Morreale - NHL.com Staff Writer

It was about the time Ron DeGregorio was appointed vice president of USA Hockey in the mid-1990s when he began taking inventory.

"If the U.S. wanted to be considered one of the best countries in hockey, we not only needed to compete with other nations, but win," DeGregorio, now president of the organization, told NHL.com. "And other than the two miracle wins in 1960 and '80, we hadn't really won any gold medals and that was unacceptable."

As it turns out, this "unacceptable" situation would eventually lead to preliminary discussions of a developmental program that would ultimately lend a hand in turning ambitious American teenagers into major contributors on and off the ice.

USHL stocked with top prospects

Friday, 11.11.2011 / 11:57 AM / 2012 NHL Draft

Mike G. Morreale - NHL.com Staff Writer

Fresh off a Clark Cup championship in the United States Hockey League a season ago, Dubuque coach Jim Montgomery knows his Fighting Saints aren't catching anyone by surprise in 2011-12.

And that's fine, particularly since Montgomery returns an impressive group with an eye toward becoming the first team since the Omaha Lancers (1993-94) to garner back-to-back USHL titles. The second-year coach, who was named the 2010-11 USHL General Manager of the Year, is also grateful to have two players who could very well be selected in the opening round of the 2012 NHL Draft in center Zemgus Girgensons and defenseman Michael Matheson.
