Red Wings address needs in acquiring Zidlicky, Cole

Tuesday, 03.03.2015 / 2:56 PM / 2015 NHL Trade Deadline

Paul Harris - NHL.com Correspondent

DETROIT -- The Detroit Red Wings have been seeking a veteran, right-handed shooting defenseman who can provide some offense since the end of last season.

They were unable to pick one up in free agency last summer and could not work out a trade for such a player prior to the beginning of the 2014-15 season.

But despite having an entire defensive corps of left-handed shooters for most of the season -- Alexey Marchenko, a right-hand shot, was called up from Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League and played a few games recently -- Detroit has a 35-15-11 record, good for 81 points and third place in the Atlantic Division.

The Red Wings' play and development over the season and their 4-1-1 record on a just-completed six-game western road trip, convinced general manager Ken Holland his team had earned the opportunity to get a little help from the outside.

Rutherford's series of trades puts stamp on Penguins

PITTSBURGH -- These are Jim Rutherford's Pittsburgh Penguins.

Through nine months with Rutherford as their general manager, the Penguins are nearly unrecognizable beyond their core, which remains the same as it has been during any season in recent memory. Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin remain the top two centers, Kris Letang continues his role as the standout defenseman and Marc-Andre Fleury calls the crease at Consol Energy Center home.

Not much else is the same. Under Rutherford, the Penguins have added forwards David Perron, Patric Hornqvist, Nick Spaling, Blake Comeau Steve Downie, Daniel Winnik and Maxim Lapierre, defensemen Christian Ehrhoff, Ian Cole and Ben Lovejoy, and goalie Thomas Greiss.

"We feel we've strengthened our defense after going through the process of our forwards, getting more balance and depth up front," Rutherford said. "So this is our team."

Coyotes looking to future after busy week of trades

Monday, 03.02.2015 / 11:03 PM / 2015 NHL Trade Deadline

Jerry Brown - NHL.com Correspondent

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- When the Arizona Coyotes traded center Antoine Vermette and defenseman Zbynek Michalek leading up to the NHL Trade Deadline, there was little surprise. Each can become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 and the Coyotes needed to get what they could before losing them.

But in between, Coyotes general manager Don Maloney pulled the trigger on a trade that sent shockwaves through the dressing room and signaled that a retool had become a total rebuild.

Coyotes leading scorer Keith Yandle, who spent his entire eight-season career in Arizona, most of it in the locker next to captain Shane Doan, was traded to the New York Rangers, with Maloney content that the promise of young center Anthony Duclair and a first- and second-round draft pick would be a big part of a future that needed to begin as soon as possible.

Canadiens add five quality players at low cost

Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin likes to say that championship teams are built at the NHL Draft, not at the NHL Trade Deadline.

For a second year in a row, the success of the Canadiens forced Bergevin to act against that principle on deadline day.

Bergevin traded four draft picks and a prospect to acquire Edmonton Oilers defenseman Jeff Petry and Buffalo Sabres forwards Torrey Mitchell and Brian Flynn in three trades Monday, filling a major need on the blue line and shoring up the Canadiens' depth up front.

Last year, Bergevin traded a second-round pick and a prospect to acquire forward Thomas Vanek from the New York Islanders, nabbing the most coveted rental forward on the market minutes before the deadline.

This time, Bergevin traded a second-round pick in the 2015 NHL Draft and a conditional fifth-round pick that reportedly could become a third- or fourth-round pick depending on the Canadiens' success in the Stanley Cup Playoffs to acquire Petry, who was one of the most sought after rental defensemen available.

For someone who doesn't believe in the value of moving at the deadline, Bergevin is proving to be quite good at it.

"I'm really happy with our group, what we've done so far this year the first 60-some games, the way we compete, the way we played, where we are in the standings," Bergevin said. "I think it's great for our players first of all and our coaching staff, the way they've done. So I'm proud of them, and [Monday] we brought help."

Defenseman Zidlicky traded to Red Wings by Devils

Monday, 03.02.2015 / 9:27 PM / 2015 NHL Trade Deadline

The Detroit Red Wings acquired defenseman Marek Zidlicky from the New Jersey Devils on Monday for a conditional third-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft.

The Red Wings will send the Devils their third-round pick in 2016 and a fifth-round selection in 2015 if they advance to the Eastern Conference Final. If Detroit reaches the Stanley Cup Final, New Jersey will receive a second-round pick in 2016.

"A right-handed shot, we haven't had that since [Brian Rafalski in 2001-12], really, powering in from the point on the power play," Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall said. "So I think that's something we've been looking for and we're going to be really excited to have him here."

Ducks GM Murray pleased with deadline trades

Monday, 03.02.2015 / 9:17 PM / 2015 NHL Trade Deadline

Curtis Zupke - NHL.com Correspondent

Perhaps the most telling part of Anaheim Ducks general manager Bob Murray's conference call with reporters Monday was a reference to what happened last season and not the whirlwind hours leading up to the NHL Trade Deadline.

Murray remembers Anaheim nearly being taken to a Game 7 against the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference First Round, and how the Ducks couldn't match the Stanley Cup champion vigor of the Los Angeles Kings in a seven-game loss in the second round.

"I didn't think we were as close in the seven-game series with L.A. as everyone else thought," Murray said. "I thought we were lucky against Dallas."

That's why Murray made the Ducks more prepared for the rugged Western Conference path with the addition of defensemen James Wisniewski and Simon Despres at the deadline Monday.

Five teams that dealt with deadline the best

Monday, 03.02.2015 / 8:14 PM / 2015 NHL Trade Deadline

Dan Rosen - NHL.com Senior Writer

The 2015 NHL Trade Deadline has passed and the dust is starting to settle around the League, which means it's time to analyze who got what, for what, and what it all means.

Some teams were trading to bolster what could be a legitimate Stanley Cup contending roster. Some were trying to acquire players who can help them get into the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Others were in full sell mode because of massive rebuilding projects.

Here are the five teams who did the best for the situation they're in:

Wild, Sabres finally agree on Stewart trade

Monday, 03.02.2015 / 8:03 PM / 2015 NHL Trade Deadline

Dan Myers - NHL.com Correspondent

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Before speaking to media members Monday evening, Minnesota Wild general manager Chuck Fletcher needed to charge his phone. The battery was nearly dead after another busy NHL Trade Deadline, something that has become a staple during the Fletcher regime.

After acquiring defenseman Jordan Leopold from the Columbus Blue Jackets earlier in the day, little else was expected from the Wild as 2 p.m. local time approached.

But shortly before the deadline (three minutes to be exact), Fletcher and Buffalo Sabres general manager Tim Murray were able to agree to a trade that sent forward Chris Stewart to Minnesota for a second-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft.

Fletcher and Murray, who are close friends, made their third straight deadline-day deal, following trades that sent Jason Pominville (2013) and Matt Moulson (2014) to the Wild from the rebuilding Sabres.

And for the third straight year, the Wild traded a future second-round pick to the Sabres, who received two second-round picks from Minnesota in 2014 and have another in 2016.

Fletcher said he and Murray had several conversations over the past year about Stewart and the Wild's potential interest in the power forward. Each time, the price Murray wanted wasn't one the Wild were willing to pay.

"I'd let him know that he was a player we would potentially have interest in," Fletcher said. "The price never seemed to fit in terms of what we spoke about."

Prices too high for Bruins GM Chiarelli at deadline

Monday, 03.02.2015 / 7:51 PM / 2015 NHL Trade Deadline

Matt Kalman - NHL.com Correspondent

BOSTON Boston Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli made the calculation that prices were so high on rental players leading up to the NHL Trade Deadline on Monday that it would be better to spend on a player the Bruins could control beyond this season.

That player turned out to be 22-year-old forward Brett Connolly, who the Bruins acquired early Monday morning from the Tampa Bay Lightning in a trade for second-round picks in the 2015 and 2016 NHL Drafts. Connolly has 12 goals and 15 points in 50 games this season.

The Bruins didn’t have a lot of maneuverability below the NHL salary cap to make a bigger trade without also trading a player with a large salary. Connolly carries a salary-cap charge of $851,000 this season, according to nhlnumbers.com.

"For us, we’re obviously under a cap crunch. But it’s just hard to get a deal done," Chiarelli said at TD Garden on Monday. "And you see that the prices are so high that it makes it prohibitive. And that’s really why we ended up going towards Connolly rather a rental. We looked really across throughout the forward rental market. He’s a young guy. He’s going to be with our group for a while. We will control his rights and he’s going to grow into a good player and he can help us now. So looking to the future but also to the present. And that’s necessitated by the prices. And what we looked at was, if we’re going to spend the picks that we’re going to spend, let’s look at all options, not just rental options."

Analysis: Trading frenzy creates little clarity in East

Monday, 03.02.2015 / 6:54 PM / 2015 NHL Trade Deadline

Corey Masisak - NHL.com Staff Writer

It is fair to suggest that every team in the top nine of the Eastern Conference standings is better than it was a week ago.

If that's true, it is also fair to suggest all of the activity in the past few days was more about keeping pace with the competition than providing any clarity on what should be a fascinating fight to reach the Stanley Cup Final.

Everyone got a little better, so the Stanley Cup Playoff picture remains murky.

The top seven teams in the East entered the day of the 2015 NHL Trade Deadline within nine points of each other. Prices were high in a seller's market, and teams were willing to pay. Given how close the teams are, there was an opportunity for one or two to pull out in front of the rest, but at this point it doesn't feel like anyone did.

"Predicting is a tough thing to get into; if we stay healthy and have enough depth and everyone performs and we get the good goaltending we think we will have, then we can go all the way," New York Rangers general manager Glen Sather said. "But there are a lot of teams thinking the same thing that I am thinking, everybody made deals, and we are all optimistic about where we will end up."
