Five reasons why the Canadiens advanced

Few people gave the Montreal Canadiens much of a chance to defeat the Boston Bruins in their Eastern Conference Second Round series, with good reason.

The Bruins were the best team in the NHL during the regular season. The Canadiens were not.

But the Canadiens have had the Bruins' number during the past two seasons, and though regular-season results don't necessarily translate to success in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, they did in this case.

Here are five reasons the Canadiens are headed to the Eastern Conference Final, where they will play the New York Rangers:

Encouraging Price leads Canadiens to Game 7 win

BOSTON -- Carey Price never has been a man of many words.

The Montreal Canadiens goaltender usually lets his play do the talking, and it's been talking a lot this season.

But when that season was on the line, when the Canadiens were 20 minutes away from going to the Eastern Conference Final for the second time in five seasons if they could hold on to a one-goal lead against the best third-period team in the NHL, Price decided it was time for him to speak with his words.

They had a big impact on his teammates.

Price addressed the Canadiens dressing room during the second intermission of their 3-1 win against the Boston Bruins in Game 7 of their Eastern Conference Second Round series Wednesday, then proceeded to make eight of his 29 saves in the third period.

"It wasn't much," Price said. "It was just a reminder to live in the moment. That's all I really said. That's the truth. At this time of year, it's easy to let your emotions get carried away, especially in a situation like tonight. I thought our guys … I don't even think they really needed for me to say anything.

"I thought we were a really composed group the whole series."

Subban says Game 7 win was 'a long time coming'

BOSTON -- Montreal Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban was furious throughout this Eastern Conference Second Round series with the way he felt the Boston Bruins were disrespecting him, his teammates and his organization.

Subban let his sublime play do the talking for seven games. When it was over, and the Canadiens were still standing after a 3-1 win in Game 7 at TD Garden on Wednesday, he let loose.

Bruins' Iginla falls short of elusive Cup again

BOSTON -- Boston Bruins forward Jarome Iginla's season ended on the same sheet of ice as it did a year ago. Each of the past two seasons ended well short of his ultimate goal: his first Stanley Cup championship.

Iginla and the top-seeded Pittsburgh Penguins were swept by the Bruins in four straight last season in the Eastern Conference Final. This season, Iginla joined the Bruins, and the Presidents' Trophy winners were ousted by the Montreal Canadiens in a seven-game Eastern Conference Second Round series.

Bruins pay for inability to adapt to Canadiens' game

BOSTON -- Milan Lucic made his way through a crowd of reporters huddled around his locker in the Boston Bruins dressing room Wednesday night, and the anger was pouring off of him like water and gathering in a pool at his feet.

And the pool was knee deep.

Lucic had just seen his team's season come to a premature end against a Montreal Canadiens team he openly admitted he hated prior to the start of this Eastern Conference Second Round series.

Standing there with cameras and microphones coming at him from every direction to catch his every word, that hate was still there.

In a sense, Lucic's hatred of the Canadiens epitomized why the Bruins lost the series, and why their 2013-14 season will be remembered for winning the Presidents' Trophy and not the Stanley Cup.

Lucic scored one goal, into an empty net, in seven games against Montreal. His center, David Krejci, didn't score any, and his opposite wing, Jarome Iginla, scored three times, once at even strength.

That is one even-strength goal in seven games from the Bruins' top forward line.

As the lack of production and defensive mistakes continued throughout the series, the Bruins consistently spoke of how important it was to simply play their game; if they did, everything would be fine, they said. From Bruins coach Claude Julien down to the players, that was the message: Bruins hockey will beat the Canadiens if they are able to execute it properly.

Not once did anyone on the Bruins admit that maybe, just maybe, something the Canadiens were doing was preventing them from playing their game.

Not until it was too late.

"They played well; you have to give them credit," Bruins defenseman Johnny Boychuk said following Boston's 3-1 loss in Game 7 on Wednesday. "They played well and they capitalized on their chances and now they're moving on."

Seven questions for Bruins-Canadiens Game 7

This should come as no surprise.

When the Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins each won in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs to set up this classic Eastern Conference Second Round series, having it go the distance was practically a given.

When the two longtime rivals face off in Game 7 on Wednesday at TD Garden (7 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, RDS) it will be the ninth do-or-die game between the Canadiens and Bruins, the most of any two teams in the four major North American professional sports leagues.

Bruins can rely on energy, but need scorers to step up

BOSTON -- The Boston Bruins are about to play their ninth Game 7 in the past seven seasons when they host the Montreal Canadiens in the Eastern Conference Second Round at TD Garden on Wednesday (7 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, RDS).

The Bruins and Canadiens have split their past eight do-or-die games.

In some of their more recent series finales, Boston has turned to the fourth line of Gregory Campbell centering wings Daniel Paille and Shawn Thornton, which is known as the Merlot Line because of the color of their practice sweaters. They have made the most of limited ice time and used energy and physicality to turn the momentum in the Bruins' favor. They're expected to do the same against Montreal, but someone will have to pick up the scoring slack.

Through the past three games against the Canadiens, including a 4-0 loss in Game 6 on Monday, the reunited fourth line has failed to make that sort of impact. With a trip to the Eastern Conference Final on the line in Game 7, the Bruins' biggest source of energy hopes to provide the necessary juice for a victory.

"Hopefully we can get out there early, get a rhythm going and get on top of them. We have to get on the forecheck. That's when we're at our best. We know that," Thornton said Tuesday during an off day for most of Boston's regulars. "We have to get pucks into areas where we can get them back. Hopefully we can create some momentum for our team; that's the goal."

Bruins, Canadiens set for ninth Game 7 in rivalry

NEW YORK -- For the ninth time in their 34 lifetime Stanley Cup Playoff series, the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens will face off in a winner-take-all Game 7 Wednesday night at TD Garden in Boston (7 p.m., ET, NBCSN, CBC, RDS). The winner will advance to the Eastern Conference Final against the winner of the Second Round series between the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers, who contest Game 7 tonight in Pittsburgh.

No rivalry in major pro sports has featured as many Game 7 showdowns as Bruins-Canadiens. Other longtime "Original Six" rivals, the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs, have squared off six times in a Game 7, as have the NBA's Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers.

Canadiens' Subban ready for another Game 7

MONTREAL -- P.K. Subban remembers it well.

His 22nd birthday still a few weeks away, Subban's play in the first round of the 2011 Stanley Cup Playoffs against the Boston Bruins was his coming out party in the NHL and capped off a tremendous rookie season and even better playoffs that ended in overtime of Game 7.

It was when the Montreal Canadiens defenseman first established himself as Public Enemy No. 1 in Boston, when he showed the NHL the tremendous skills he had in his wide and varied tool box, and when he first displayed how confident he was to use them.

Now, three years later, a matured and seasoned Subban will go back to Boston for Game 7 of this Eastern Conference Second Round series on Wednesday (7 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, RDS) after Montreal evened this best-of-7 series at three games apiece with a 4-0 victory at Bell Centre on Monday night.

Game 7 will take place a day after Subban's 25th birthday, when he will attempt to finish what he started in 2011.

Bruins quickly shifting focus to Game 7

MONTREAL -- Boston Bruins center David Krejci and left wing Milan Lucic have converted on dozens of odd-man rushes over the past four seasons.

One minute into Game 6 of their Eastern Conference Second Round against the Montreal Canadiens, those two forwards had a chance to put the home team back on their heels at Bell Centre on Monday night.

Krejci, the Bruins' leading scorer in the regular season with 69 points, led a 2-on-1 into the Montreal zone and slid the puck over to Lucic, a 24-goal scorer this season, with Canadiens goaltender Carey Price a little slow tracking the pass. Of course, it didn't matter where Price was because Lucic fanned on the shot.
