Malkin, Stamkos, Lundqvist named Lindsay finalists

Wednesday, 05.02.2012 / 1:46 PM / 2012 NHL Awards

Tal Pinchevsky - NHL.com Staff Writer

Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin, Tampa Bay Lightning center Steven Stamkos and New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist have been named as nominees for this year's Ted Lindsay Award.

Formerly known as the Lester B. Person Award, the trophy is given annually to the NHL's "most outstanding player," with members of the National Hockey League Players' Association voting for the winner. Daniel Sedin of the Vancouver Canucks won the award last year.

Last week, Lundqvist, Malkin, and Stamkos were all named finalists for the Hart Trophy, which is awarded annually "to the player adjudged to be the most valuable to his team."

Stamkos and Malkin are already guaranteed to see the podium at the 2012 NHL Awards, which will take place June 20 at the Encore Theater at Wynn Las Vegas. Stamkos clinched the Maurice Richard Trophy as the League's top goal scorer, while Malkin will receive the Art Ross Trophy as the League's leading scorer. Lundqvist will also be vying for the Vezina Trophy, given annually to the League's top goaltender.

The three nominees could potentially join a prominent list of 13 players who have won both the Hart and Lindsay in the same season. That list includes Guy Lafleur, Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Dominik Hasek, Joe Sakic, Sidney Crosby, and Alex Ovechkin.

Adams finalists: Hitchcock, MacLean, Tortorella

Monday, 04.30.2012 / 10:53 AM / 2012 NHL Awards

Adam Kimelman - NHL.com Deputy Managing Editor

"I think what you see is what you get with him. He's an emotional coach and he's passionate, and for those reasons that's why he's such a good coach."
-- Rangers captain Ryan Callahan on John Tortorella

Coaching in the NHL isn't about barking orders at players and expecting them to execute automatically. The best coaches don't just make demands of their players, but are able to explain to them why they're making those demands, and show how going along with them will help the team.

This season, no coaches did that better than Ken Hitchcock of the St. Louis Blues, Paul MacLean of the Ottawa Senators and John Tortorella of the New York Rangers, who have been voted as finalists for the 2012 Jack Adams Award.

Defining what makes a player valuable to his team isn't easy.

Is it wins and losses? Goals scored? How would the team do if this player suddenly disappeared from the roster?

That's the annual conundrum facing the members of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association who vote on the Hart Trophy, awarded annually "to the player adjudged to be the most valuable to his team."

This year, the writers chose New York Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist, Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin and Tampa Bay Lightning center Steven Stamkos as the finalists for the award. The winner will be announced at the 2012 NHL Awards Show, June 20 at the Encore Theater at Wynn Las Vegas.

Chara, Karlsson and Weber are Norris finalists

Thursday, 04.26.2012 / 11:00 AM / 2012 NHL Awards

Adam Kimelman - NHL.com Deputy Managing Editor

The responsibilities a defenseman faces are numerous. He has to be strong in his own end to prevent goals, make smooth passes out of the defensive zone and chip in offensively by getting pucks to the net. The best blueliners also have to be able to play large amounts of ice time in all situations.

Three defensemen met those responsibilities better than any other during the 2011-12 season, and because of that Zdeno Chara of the Boston Bruins, Erik Karlsson of the Ottawa Senators and Shea Weber of the Nashville Predators have been named as finalists for the Norris Trophy, awarded "to the defense player who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-round ability in the position."

Backes, Bergeron and Datsyuk named Selke finalists

Monday, 04.23.2012 / 11:00 AM / 2012 NHL Awards

Adam Kimelman - NHL.com Deputy Managing Editor

The truly elite players are the ones who can play -- and excel -- in any situation. The ones who are used not only when their team needs a goal, but also when it needs to prevent a goal.

The St. Louis Blues' David Backes, Patrice Bergeron of the Boston Bruins and Pavel Datsyuk of the Detroit Red Wings are just those kind of players, and for that reason they have been named as finalists for this year's Frank J. Selke Trophy, an annual award given "to the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game."

The winner is selected by a vote of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association, and will be announced at the 2012 NHL Awards Show, June 20 at the Encore Theater at Wynn Las Vegas.
