Jokinen likes what he sees in Laviolette, Predators

The Nashville Predators' hiring of coach Peter Laviolette and the attraction of playing under his offensive system was enough to lure veteran center Olli Jokinen to the Music City.

Jokinen is familiar with Laviolette's up-tempo offense having frequently competed against his teams throughout his 17-year NHL career. Upon signing a one-year contract worth a reported $2.5 million, he views the new-look Predators as an opportunity to spark new life into his game and can't wait to get going.

"Obviously with the excitement and the passion about the game, and ideas of how he was going to coach this team, that was one of the biggest reasons I decided to come here," Jokinen, 35, told reporters Saturday. "Speaking with him, I got excited. I wanted to start playing tomorrow.

The Vancouver Canucks have re-signed restricted free agent defenseman Christopher Tanev to a one-year contract, the team announced Saturday. Financial details were not disclosed.

Tanev, 24, has spent all four of his NHL seasons with the Canucks, who signed the Toronto native as an undrafted free agent in 2010. He set career highs last season with six goals, 11 assists, 17 points and a plus-12 rating in 64 games.

"He had a good season last year," general manager Jim Benning told the Vancouver Province. "He had a couple of injuries along the way, but he kind of took the next step. He's still a young player.

"We wanted to see another full season, another body of work this next season. ... If he has another good season, then we'll try to lock him up long-term."

Analysis: Which goalies signed with right teams

Saturday, 07.05.2014 / 8:37 PM / NHL Free Agency 2014

Kevin Woodley - NHL.com Correspondent

VANCOUVER -- There are comparisons to be made between golfers and goalies because, like a golf swing, the finest details of movement and technique on the ice are broken down and analyzed. Like grooving a golf swing, repetition can be key to consistency for a goaltender searching for his most efficient, effective style.

Are there any comparisons to be made between signing an NHL goaltender and picking a winner on the PGA Tour? In golf, we often hear about "horses for courses," or choosing a player based on how a specific course fits his strengths and weaknesses. The same can apply to picking a goalie.

Not every team leans as heavily on its goaltending coach to help choose its personnel; many that do will get an opinion that factors in the system a team plays and how it defends. Finding a good fit between a goaltender and his team's style is important.

The Ottawa Senators and center David Legwand have agreed to a two-year, $6 million contract, the team announced Friday.

He will make $2.5 million in 2014-15 and $3.5 million in 2015-16. His NHL salary-cap charge will be $3 million per season.

"We had other options," Legwand said Friday, according to the Senators website. "I think Ottawa is a place where I liked the coaching staff, I played against Paul MacLean a lot when he was with Detroit, and obviously with Jason Spezza leaving I thought it was a good fit for myself. … It's an exciting time there and it should be a good season for us."
