ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Minnesota North Stars still have plenty of fans, as evidenced Friday by the first public appearance of the North Stars and Minnesota Wild alumni who will skate against a team of former Chicago Blackhawks at TCF Bank Stadium on Feb. 20, one day before the Coors Light Stadium Series game between the Blackhawks and Wild.

The North Stars and Wild alumni participated in a "Skate with the Stars" outdoor event at the Wells Fargo Winterskate in downtown St. Paul that offered fans a meet-and-greet with former players from Minnesota's two NHL teams.

Many young fans waited patiently for former Wild players Wes Walz and Antti Laaksonen. Steps away, numerous parents chatted up a number of former North Stars, including goaltender Don Beaupre, forward Neal Broten and defenseman Brad Maxwell.

For the Minnesota North Stars alumni, who will play against their Chicago counterparts the day before, it seems as if the game is approaching quickly.

"It comes fast," said Brad Maxwell, the President of the Minnesota NHL Alumni Association and former North Stars defenseman. "It seemed like it was three months ago and now it's going to be a month away."

The Minnesota Wild got a first taste of outdoor hockey Tuesday, holding practice outside at a rink in Edina, Minn.

The Wild will face the Chicago Blackhawks on Feb. 21 in the 2016 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.

About 1,000 fans watched practice through a light snowfall on a 20-degree day.

"That was fun. It was a neat atmosphere," defenseman Ryan Suter told the Wild website. "Brooks, my son, plays out there, so I always get to watch him play. It was neat to be out there."

Jeremy Roenick doesn't get on the ice very much anymore, but he couldn't resist the invitation to lace up his skates for the Chicago Blackhawks one more time.

Roenick, who hasn't played in a Blackhawks uniform since May 13, 1996, will be in his original NHL colors on Feb. 20 for the 2016 NHL Stadium Series Alumni Game, when a team of former Blackhawks will play against a team of Minnesota North Stars and Minnesota Wild alums at TCF Bank Stadium.

Wild savor 'traditional' Stadium Series jerseys

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- It's no surprise that Minnesota Wild defenseman Ryan Suter is a big fan of the jerseys they will wear for their 2016 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series game against the Chicago Blackhawks at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minn., on Feb. 22, 2016.

"It's laid back, it's not flashy, it's traditional. It's kind of got that old school look to it," Suter said.

The Wild and Blackhawks each revealed their Stadium Series jerseys on Tuesday, with the hosts doing so in an on-ice unveiling in front of media and selected season-ticket holders at Xcel Energy Center.

Wild, North Stars alumni to face Blackhawks outdoors

MINNEAPOLIS -- If there was ever going to be a scuffle at an alumni game, the one between the Chicago Blackhawks and the "Team Minnesota" squad comprised of legends from the Minnesota North Stars and Minnesota Wild might just provide it.

Blackhawks alumni along with those of the North Stars and Wild will play a game on Feb. 20, 2016, one day before the current franchises take part in the Coors Lights NHL Stadium Series game at TCF Bank Stadium on the campus of the University of Minnesota.

"I don't have to hype it because it comes naturally," said Lou Nanne, former North Stars player, coach and general manager. "In 1984 or '85, we had some owners who were trying to get away from divisional rivalries saying, 'Let's play each other less.' [Blackhawks owner] Bill Wirtz stood up and said, 'Give me 40 games against the North Stars and I'll take them.'

"We've had such a passionate rivalry and it means so much. I think it's appropriate that these two teams are playing the first outdoor NHL game here."
