NASHVILLE -- If the rosters for the NHL's best-on-best midseason 3-on-3 extravaganza can serve as an indication, the biggest wildcard team set to compete for gold in the next best-on-best international hockey tournament is looking like a legitimate contender.

Five eligible candidates for Team North America at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, the team consisting of the best 23-and-under Canadians and Americans, will play in the 2016 NHL All-Star Game on Sunday at Bridgestone Arena (5 p.m. ET; NBCSN, CBC, TVA Sports).

That's only three fewer candidates than Team USA has competing here. It's two more than Team Russia and Team Sweden, three more than Team Finland and four more than Team Europe and Team Czech Republic.

Nashville Predators assistant coach Phil Housley and Scott Gordon, coach of Lehigh Valley of the American Hockey League, were also named assistants to Team USA coach John Tortorella.

"I'm looking forward to working with our coaching staff in guiding the group of players that are ultimately selected to represent our country in the World Cup," Tortorella, coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets, said in a release by USA Hockey. "We have a group of coaches assembled that all bring something different to the table and that is a real positive as we move toward our ultimate goal of winning the tournament."

TORONTO -- Todd McLellan and Peter DeBoer will be reunited on the coaching staff of the Youngstars team for the World Cup of Hockey in 10 months.

It is a strange dynamic, considering DeBoer replaced McLellan as head coach of the San Jose Sharks last summer. But the two did work together to successfully steer Sidney Crosby and Canada to a gold-medal victory at the 2015 IIHF World Hockey Championship in Prague, Czech Republic last spring.

Prior to the Sharks' 5-4 overtime victory against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday, DeBoer took time to answer questions about the World Cup.

Roenick: Blue Jackets model for Team USA success

Sunday, 12.13.2015 / 3:00 AM / World Cup of Hockey 2016

Dan Rosen - NHL.com Senior Writer

Strange as it sounds considering how the Columbus Blue Jackets have struggled this season, NBC analyst Jeremy Roenick uses them as his model for how the United States will have to play in order to win the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.

"We're not going to beat Canada on talent; we're going to beat Canada on determination and grit and will," said Roenick, who played for the U.S. national team four times, including twice in the Olympics. "It's similar to the way Columbus plays right now. They're not going to win on talent; they're going to win on sheer determination to try to beat you down."

When it was immediately pointed out to Roenick that Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella also is the coach of the U.S. World Cup team, he said he didn't even make that connection when he made the comparison.

NEW YORK -- Colorado Avalanche forward Matt Duchene is looking forward to another opportunity to represent his country at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.

"I want to be on that Canada team," Duchene said. "I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a goal of mine."

Duchene, 24, discussed the World Cup of Hockey and other topics with NHL.com during his visit Wednesday to the NHL offices in Manhattan. The Avalanche are in town to play against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Thursday (7 p.m. ET; SN360, ALT, MSG).

Duchene, who was named NHL third star of the month for November after leading the League with 11 goals in 14 games, wants to prove he belongs on the 23-player roster for Team Canada at the World Cup. Training camp is scheduled Sept. 4, 2016 at a location to be determined. It will be a chance for Duchene to add to an already impressive medal collection.

Team Europe scout Burke likes goaltending options

Sunday, 11.29.2015 / 3:00 AM / World Cup of Hockey 2016

Jon Lane - NHL.com Staff Writer

Energized by a summer respite to recover from double hip replacement surgery, Sean Burke is eager to make his mark on Team Europe and the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.

Burke was goaltending coach and assistant to the general manager for the Arizona Coyotes the past three seasons before leaving the organization in July when his contract expired. He started with the Coyotes as director of prospect development less than a year into his retirement from the NHL, so the medically induced break turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

"It was a good summer for me to mentally get a break and physically do what I needed to do," Burke said. "I've been going hard the last couple of years with the Coyotes, Team Canada, World Junior stuff. It was nice to get away."
