A host of BC alumni around the League heaped praise upon their former coach, who reached the milestone Friday when Boston College defeated the University of Massachusetts 8-0 in Amherst, Mass.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Less than 24 hours after giving up five goals to Miami, Providence goaltender Jon Gillies was back on his game.

Gillies, a third-round pick (No. 75) by the Calgary Flames in the 2012 NHL Draft, made 23 saves Sunday to lead the Friars to a 4-1 victory against Denver in the NCAA East Regional final, sending Providence to the Frozen Four for the first time in 30 years. Providence will face Nebraska-Omaha in one of two national semifinal games.

Gillies, a junior, leads all Hockey East goaltenders with a .929 save percentage and a 2.01 goals-against average. He had no trouble shaking off the wild ending to the semifinal game against Miami, in which the RedHawks nearly overcame a four-goal deficit in the third period.

BOSTON -- Jack Eichel didn't score the game-winning goal, but the Boston University forward helped his school win its first Beanpot Tournament in six years on Monday.

Eichel helped draw the hooking penalty that put B.U. on an overtime power play, then fought to dig a puck out of the corner. His teammates took care of the rest.

Captain Matt Grzelcyk scored 51 seconds into the extra period to give the Terriers a 4-3 victory against Northeastern University and their first Beanpot Championship since 2009.

Grzelcyk, a junior defenseman, led B.U. with two goals and was named Beanpot MVP.

PHILADELPHIA -- The best defensemen in Philadelphia Flyers history -- Joe Watson, Mark Howe, Eric Desjardins, Chris Pronger -- have one thing in common: All were drafted and developed by other teams prior to coming to the Flyers.

Could Shayne Gostisbehere be the player that changes all that?

A 2012 third-round pick (No. 78), Gostisbehere had a brilliant goal and two assists to lead Union College to a 7-4 win against the University of Minnesota on Saturday in the NCAA championship game.

Gostisbehere was a plus-7 with five shots on goal, was part of a penalty-killing unit that stopped the Gophers on three of its four power plays and was on the ice in the final seconds to help protect the lead.

PHILADELPHIA -- After one of the more dramatic nights in NCAA hockey history, the Union College and University of Minnesota hockey teams were back at work Friday, trying to put the celebrations and memories behind them.

"I think when you wake up this morning, you realize that you're playing for a national title and you better get your mind ready to go," said Minnesota center Kyle Rau, a Florida Panthers prospect who assisted on both Gophers goals in their 2-1 win against the University of North Dakota on Thursday. "Because if you're not, you're going to lay an egg."

Union started Thursday with a 5-4 win against Boston College in the first national semifinal, and Minnesota closed the night by scoring the winning goal with 0.6 seconds left against UND.
