Capitals' Barry Trotz wins Jack Adams Award as NHL's top coach

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Barry Trotz of the Washington Capitals won the Jack Adams Award on Wednesday as the top coach in the NHL for 2015-16.

The 53-year-old Trotz led the Capitals to 56-18-8 mark as the club captured the Presidents' Trophy as the league's top regular-season club.

He was a top-three selection on 80 of the 89 ballots cast, including 58 first-place votes.

Also nominated were Lindy Ruff of the Dallas Stars and Gerard Gallant of the Florida Panthers.

Ruff led the Stars to a 50-23-9 record that culminated in the club finishing first in the Western Conference and second in the overall standings with 109 points.

Gallant led the Panthers to a 47-26-9 record and the Atlantic Division title. A first-time finalist, Gallant's 47 wins set a franchise-high, as did the team's 103 points.

Both Ruff and Trotz were nominated for a third time in their careers.
