Ottawa Senators defenceman Chris Phillips announces his retirement

OTTAWA - Longtime Ottawa Senators defenceman Chris Phillips is announcing his retirement.

He made his debut with the Senators in 1997 and spent his entire NHL career with the team.

Phillips missed this past season due to back problems.

He had 288 points (71-217) in 1,179 regular-season games over his career.

The 38-year-old Calgary native also had 15 points (6-9) in 114 career playoff games.

Phillips was the first overall pick in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft.
