WHL Roundup: Wheat Kings score six in first period, rout the Blades 8-1

BRANDON, Man. - The Brandon Wheat Kings weren't wasting any time to find the scoresheet Saturday night.

Ivan Provorov scored twice in a six-goal first period as the Wheat Kings routed the Saskatoon Blades 8-1 in Western Hockey League action.

Stelio Mattheos had two goals and an assist for Brandon (45-18-6), which improved to 8-0-2 in its last 10 games. Jayce Hawryluk, Nolan Patrick, John Quenneville and Reid Duke rounded out the attack while Kale Clague tacked on three helpers.

Mason McCarty scored in the first period for the Blades (25-40-4).

Logan Thompson made 25 saves for the win in net. Evan Smith started for Saskatoon, but was pulled after turning away 4-of-9 shots in 7:21. Brock Hamm stopped 37 shots in relief.

The Wheat Kings were 2 for 5 on the power play, with the Blades going scoreless on seven attempts.

RAIDERS 2 BRONCOS 1 (OT)

PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. — Jesse Lees scored 15 seconds into overtime as the Raiders slipped past Swift Current.

Simon Stransky opened the scoring for Prince Albert (37-24-8) in the second while Austin Glover assisted on both goals.

Jon Martin also found the back of the net in the second for the Broncos (24-36-9).

MOOSE JAW, Sask. — Adam Brooks had a goal and two assists as Regina downed the Warriors.

Jared Freadrich and Cole Sanford scored power-play goals in the first period for the Pats (34-27-8), who won their third straight. Austin Wagner and Lane Zablocki also chipped in.

Brayden Point replied with a power-play goal in the third for Moose Jaw (34-26-9).

HITMEN 4 OIL KINGS 2

CALGARY — Travis Sanheim had a goal and two assists as the Hitmen doubled up Edmonton.

Jake Bean, Michael Zipp and Jackson Houck rounded out the attack for Calgary (39-25-4), which won its third in a row. Radel Fazleev tacked on three helpers.

Dario Meyer and Brett Pollock scored for the Oil Kings (28-33-7).

REBELS 6 HURRICANES 1

RED DEER, Alta. — Jake DeBrusk scored the first of five goals in the second period and Conner Bleackley had three assists as the Rebels downed Lethbridge.

Colton Bobyk, Haydn Fleury, Kayle Doetzel, Brandon Hagel and Adam Helewka supplied the rest of the offence for Red Deer (43-23-3).

Tyler Wong responded just past the midway point on the second for the Hurricanes (45-22-2).

CRANBROOK, B.C. — River Beattie and Zak Zborosky had a goal and an assist each as the Ice snapped a 13-game slide by holding off Medicine Hat.

Max Patterson and Cale Fleury also chipped in for Kootenay (11-52-6).

Clayton Kirichenko, Mason Shaw and Max Gerlach scored for the Tigers (28-36-5).

KAMLOOPS, B.C. — Jake Kryski scored the only of the shootout as the Blazers topped Vancouver for their seventh straight win.

Gage Quinney tied the game at 1-1 with a power-play goal in the third for Kamloops (36-25-9).

Radovan Bondra had a power-play goal to open the scoring for the Giants (23-38-9).

PORTLAND, Ore. — Donovan Neuls scored the winner late in the second period as Seattle edged the Winterhawks for its 10th straight win.

Ryan Gropp and Nolan Volcan had the others for the Thunderbirds (42-23-3).

Dominic Turgeon, on the power play, and Rodrigo Abols found the back of the net for Portland (34-30-4).

SPOKANE, Wash. — Rourke Chartier, Dillon Dube and Cal Foote all had a goal and two assists as Kelowna routed the Chiefs.

Tyson Baillie, Rodney Southam and Tomas Soustal also scored for the Rockets (46-18-4).

Dominic Zwerger opened the scoring with a short-handed goal for Spokane (31-28-9).

KENNEWICK, Wash. — Jordan Roy and Jordan Topping scored in the third period as the Americans got past Everett, snapping a three-game slide.

Parker AuCoin and Brandon Carlo supplied the rest of the offence for Tri-City (32-34-3).

Patrick Bajkov replied late in the third for the Silvertips (37-24-7).

Parker Bowles of the Americans received a major penalty for slashing and game misconduct in the third period.
