QMJHL Roundup: Brandon Gignac scores OT winner as Cataractes top Mooseheads

SHAWINIGAN, Que. - Brandon Gignac found the back of the net 2:09 into overtime to lift the Shawinigan Cataractes to a 3-2 victory over the Halifax Mooseheads on Saturday in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action.

Mathieu Olivier and Dennis Yan, with the tying goal with four seconds left in the third period, scored in regulation for the Cataractes (35-14-4).

Ilya Putintsev and Vincent Wyatt had goals for the Mooseheads (17-32-7), who have dropped four straight.

Shawinigan goaltender Philippe Cadorette, who was credited with an assist on the winning goal, made 20 saves. Eric Brassard took the loss after stopping 31 shots.

The Cataractes were 0 for 4 on the power play while Halifax scored once on four chances with the man advantage.

FOREURS 6 PHOENIX 3

SHERBROOKE, Que. — Shawn Ouellette-St-Amant struck twice to lead Val-d'Or over the Phoenix.

Nicolas Aube-Kubel and Anthony Richard had a goal and an assist apiece for the league-leading Foreurs (41-10-3). Olivier Calipeau and Francois Beauchemin also scored.

Chad Pietroniro had two goals for Sherbrooke (20-26-8). Guillaume Gauthier had the other.

SCREAMING EAGLES 3 VOLTIGEURS 2

DRUMMONDVILLE, Que. — Massimo Carozza's third-period goal stood as the winner as Cape Breton edged the Voltigeurs.

Maxim Lazarev and Dillon Boucher also scored for the Screaming Eagles (28-22-6).

Charley Graaskamp and William Poirier had the goals for Drummondville (24-29-2). Michael Carcone assisted on both.

TITAN 4 WILDCATS 3

BATHURST, N.B. — Jordan Maher tied the game on a power-play goal 19:12 into the third and Mark Trickett scored the winner 19 seconds later to lift the Titan past Moncton.

Jeffrey Truchon-Viel and Jordan Maher scored in the first two minutes of the game to put Acadie-Bathurst (21-27-5) ahead early.

The Wildcats (30-17-8) replied with three consecutive goals from William Bower, Cameron Askew, and Cody Donaghey to take the lead before the Titan rallied back.

ISLANDERS 6 SAGUENEENS 4

CHARLOTTETOWN — Samuel Blais had two goals and an assist to power the Islanders over Chicoutimi.

Jake Coughler scored once and set up two more goals for Charlottetown (25-24-7). Alexis Vanier had a goal and a helper while Daniel Sprong and Mitchell Balmas also scored.

Jonathan Bourcier, Dmitry Zhukenov and Nicolas Roy had a goal and an assist apiece for the Sagueneens (24-21-8) with Jake Smith rounding out the offence. Chicoutimi's Elie Berube received a game misconduct in the second period for checking to the head.

SEA DOGS 5 DRAKKAR 1

SAINT JOHN, N.B. — Adam Marsh scored two goals and Matthew Highmore chipped in with two assists as the Sea Dogs handed Baie-Comeau its eighth straight loss.

Mathieu Joseph had a short-handed goal and an assist for Saint John (34-14-4). Sam Povorozniouk and Spencer Smallman rounded out the attack.

Matt Jones had the lone goal for the Drakkar (8-41-3).
