WHL Roundup: Jamal Watson scores OT winner as Broncos get past Cougars

SWIFT CURRENT, Sask. - Jamal Watson scored the winner early in overtime and Taz Burman made 29 saves as the Swift Current Broncos got past the Prince George Cougars 4-3 on Friday night in Western Hockey League action.

Max Lajoie, Jon Martin and Sahvan Khaira also had goals for the Broncos (16-27-5).

Chase Witala struck twice, with Brogan O'Brien adding the other for Prince George (29-18-3). Ty Edmonds turned aside 30 shots in net.

Swift Current was 1 for 7 on the power play while the Cougars scored once on four chances.

REGINA — Tyler Brown stopped all 28 shots he faced as the Pats shut out Saskatoon.

Riley Woods had a pair of goals, with Austin Wagner and Robbie Holmes also chipping in for Regina (21-21-7).

Brock Hamm kicked out 33 shots for the Blades (17-28-4).

CALGARY — Tyler Mrkonjic scored twice and added an assist as the Hitmen toppled Prince Albert.

Jakob Stukel and Beck Malenstyn had the others for Calgary (29-18-2).

Jordan Tkatch had a power-play goal for the Raiders (26-17-5).

EDMONTON — Andrew Koep struck twice as the Oil Kings edged Brandon.

Lane Bauer and Dysin Mayo also chipped in for Edmonton (20-23-7).

Jayce Hawryluk, Ivan Provorov and Tyler Coulter supplied the offence for the Wheat Kings (30-14-4).

RED DEER, Alta. — Adam Helewka had a pair of goals as the Rebels routed Kootenay.

Austin Strand, Colton Bobyk, Austin Pratt, Grayson Pawlenchuk, Jake DeBrusk and Adam Musil rounded out the attack for Red Deer (32-15-3).

Matt Alfaro and Zak Zborosky found the back of the net for the Ice (8-37-4).

MEDICINE HAT, Alta. — Matt Bradley had a pair of goals in the third period as the Tigers got past Moose Jaw.

David Quenneville added the other for Medicine Hat (20-25-4).

Nikita Popugaev opened the scoring for the Warriors (24-18-7).

GIANTS 4 BLAZERS 3 (OT)

KAMLOOPS, B.C. — Ty Ronning scored the winner at 4:58 of overtime as Vancouver slipped past the Blazers.

Chase Lang, Ben Thomas and Trevor Cox supplied the rest of the offence for the Giants (19-27-5).

Gage Quinney had a pair of goals for Kamloops (22-18-8), with Dallas Valentine adding the other.

CHIEFS 5 THUNDERBIRDS 4

SPOKANE, Wash. — Presten Kopeck scored the eventual winner in a four-goal third period for the Chiefs as they edged Seattle.

Markson Bechtold, Dominic Zwerger, Nik Andersen and Dalton Hamaliuk also chipped in for Spokane (23-19-5), which won its third straight. Keanu Yamamoto tacked on three helpers.

Scott Eansor, Ryan Gropp, Mathew Barzal and Keegan Kolesar had goals for the Thunderbirds (26-18-3).

KENNEWICK, Wash. — Parker Wotherspoon had the winner as the Americans topped Everett.

Jordan Topping opened the scoring in the first period for Tri-City (21-25-2).

Patrick Bajkov responded late in the second for the Silvertips (28-15-4).

KELOWNA, B.C. — Rourke Chartier scored twice as the Rockets downed Portland for their fifth-straight win.

Nick Merkley had a goal and two assists, with Justin Kirkland and Tyson Baillie adding the others for Kelowna (34-11-3). Calvin Thurkauf tacked on three assists.

Cody Glass, Rodrigo Abols and Dominic Turgeon found the back of the net for the Winterhawks (25-22-2).

VICTORIA — Jack Walker struck twice as the Royals snapped Lethbridge's 10-game winning streak.

Alex Forsbreg added a power-play goal midway through the third for Victoria (30-15-5), which are 6-0-1 in its last seven games.

Ryley Lindgren had a power-play goal of his own for the Hurricanes (36-13-0).
