SENATORS EDGE SHARKS IN SHOOTOUT

Zack Smith tied the score on a third-period penalty shot and Mika Zibanejad (0-1—1) had the decisive goal in the shootout as the Ottawa Senators rallied for a 4-3 win and snapped the San Jose Sharks' win streak at five games.

* Smith converted on the first penalty shot attempt of his NHL career (364 GP). It was also Smith's third shorthanded goal of the season (45 GP), eclipsing his single-season career high of two from 2011-12 (81 GP).

* The Senators lead the NHL with nine shorthanded goals this season:

* Craig Anderson made 32 saves through 65 minutes and denied all three shooters in the shootout to pick up his third win in his past four games (3-1-0) and improve to 19-13-4 overall (2.79 goals-against average, .916 save percentage, two shutouts).

* The Senators have won four consecutive games vs. SJS dating to Feb. 28, 2015 (SJS: 0-3-1).

BLUES RALLY PAST PENGUINS

The St. Louis Blues scored four unanswered goals to rally for a 5-2 win against the Pittsburgh Penguins and improve to 7-2-1 in their past 10 games at Scottrade Center.

* At 27-15-7 (61 points), the Blues moved within two points of the idle Dallas Stars (29-12-5, 63 points) for second place in the Central Division.

* Paul Stastny (1-3—4) had his first four-point game of the season (31 GP), one shy of his career-high last achieved Dec. 9, 2007 vs. STL (2-3—5 w/ COL).

* Brian Elliott (36 saves) is 4-1-0 in his past five games and 9-5-4 this season (2.39 GAA, .921 save percentage). Elliott is 6-2-1 in 10 regular-season appearances vs. PIT (2.43 GAA, .929 save percentage, one shutout).

* The Blues are 7-2-1 in their past 10 home games vs. PIT dating to Nov. 16, 2000 (PIT: 3-4-3).

AROUND THE RINKS

* Semyon Varlamov made 36 saves and Carl Soderberg (1-1—2) factored on each of the Colorado Avalanche's goals in a 2-1 win against the Winnipeg Jets that improved the Avalanche to 10-3-1 against Central Division teams this season. Varlamov is 16-12-3 (2.76 GAA, .912 save percentage, one shutout) and is now 10-5-2 in 18 appearances vs. WPG/ATL (2.66 GAA, .911 save percentage). Soderberg had his sixth multipoint game of the season (47 GP). At 23-21-3 (49 points), the Avalanche passed the idle Nashville Predators (20-17-8, 48 points) to take sole possession of the second wild card spot into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference.

* Jack Eichel (1-1—2) and Jamie McGinn each scored power-play goals to help the Buffalo Sabres earn a 2-1 win against the Arizona Coyotes, their fourth win in their past five games (4-1-0). Eichel leads rookies with five power-play goals this season (46 GP) and is tied for second with 14 goals overall (w/ Dylan Larkin). Eichel added an assist for his sixth multipoint game and ranks fourth among rookies in assists (15) and points (29). Chad Johnson made 26 saves against his former team and is 12-12-2 this season (2.36 GAA, .920 save percentage, one shutout). The Sabres are 10-1-1 in their past 12 games vs. ARI/PHX dating to Jan. 31, 2009 (ARI/PHX: 2-8-2), a stretch which includes victories in six consecutive road games.

* Taylor Hall (2-1—3) and Teddy Purcell (1-2—3) each had three points as the Edmonton Oilers won 4-2 and snapped the Florida Panthers' franchise-record home winning streak at seven games. Hall had his seventh three-point and second multigoal game of the season (47 GP) and leads the Oilers in goals (18), assists (27) and points (45). Purcell had his third three-point game of the season. The Oilers, who snapped a seven-game overall road losing skid (0-4-3), are 7-0-0 in their past seven road games vs. FLA dating to Dec. 7, 2002 (FLA: 0-2-5).

MILESTONES & BENCHMARKS

* Avalanche forward Jarome Iginla scored the 602nd goal of his NHL career and passed Jari Kurri (601) for sole possession of 18th on the all-time list. Iginla also moved within six of tying Dino Ciccarelli (608) for 17th.

* Iginla's goal was the 96th game-winning goal of his NHL career. Per Elias, he moved into a tie with Mats Sundin for ninth on the NHL's all-time list.

* Sharks forward Joe Thornton registered the 927th assist of his NHL career and passed Stan Mikita (926) for sole possession of 17th on the all-time list. Thornton has at least one point in 14 of his past 15 games (5-14—19), including 2-6—8 on his current six-game point streak.

* Jets forward JC Lipon made his NHL debut (7:11 TOI). Defenseman Andre Benoit (10:46 TOI) made his debut with the Blues.

* Sabres forward David Legwand skated in the 1,100th game of his NHL career, becoming the 15th active player to reach the milestone.

LOOSE PUCKS

Oilers goaltender Cam Talbot (31 saves) is 9-13-3 this season (2.56 GAA, .915 save percentage, one shutout). … Blues forwards Alexander Steen (1-1—2) and Troy Brouwer (1-1—2) each had a goal and an assist. … Blues forward Vladimir Tarasenko scored his 25th goal of the season and tied Tyler Seguin (25 w/ DAL) for fourth in the NHL. Tarasenko leads the Blues with 25-21—46 this season (47 GP). … Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin scored his team-leading 20th goal of the season (45 GP), reaching the 20-goal mark for the third consecutive season and the eighth time in his 10 NHL seasons. Per the Elias Sports Bureau, Malkin became the sixth player in franchise history to score 20 or more goals in eight or more seasons, joining Mario Lemieux (12 seasons), Jaromir Jagr (11), Rick Kehoe (9), Jean Pronovost (9) and Sidney Crosby (8). … The Avalanche have won five of their past six games vs. WPG dating to Dec. 11, 2014 (WPG: 1-3-2), including four consecutive victories. … Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson (0-1—1) ranks second in the NHL with 38 assists this season and leads all defensemen with 9-38—47 (46 GP). … NHL corporate partner Molson Canadian built a rink on a rooftop in downtown Toronto as part of their #AnythingForHockey campaign... Rogers will produce and broadcast the first ever NHL game in 4K technology on Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. when the Toronto Maple Leafs host the Montreal Canadiens. … The NHL Central Scouting Midterm Rankings will be released on Tuesday at 11 a.m. on NHL.com. … Blackhawks right wing Patrick Kane, Flames center Sam Bennett and Kings center Anze Kopitar have been named the NHL's "Three Stars" for the week ending Jan. 17. … ICYMI: The Sharks honored former forward Igor Larionov in a pregame ceremony at SAP Center.
