Selanne welcomes Ovechkin into the 500-goal club
Former NHL star Teemu Selanne sent a special welcome to the newest 500-goal scorer, Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin.

Retired forward Teemu Selanne, a proud member of the 500-goal club, was happy to welcome Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin into the select fraternity.

Ovechkin became the 43rd player to score 500 NHL goals when he scored 16:19 into the second period against the Ottawa Senators at Verizon Center on Sunday. He is the first player to reach 500 since Jarome Iginla on Jan. 7, 2012. He scored No. 501 later in the game. His 26 goals this season lead the League.

"Score No. 8, Alexander Ovechkin!" Selanne said in a video posted by the Anaheim Ducks. "Well done. Five hundred goals in the NHL. Welcome to the club and keep it going. Many, many to come."

Selanne scored 684 goals in 1,451 NHL games in 21 seasons with the Winnipeg Jets, San Jose Sharks, Colorado Avalanche and the Ducks to rank No. 11 on the all-time list.

Ovechkin, named the League's First Star of the Week on Monday after five goals in three games, has 501 goals in 801 games in 11 seasons, all with the Capitals. He's No. 42 on the all-time goal list, one behind Joe Mullen for 41st and two behind No. 40 Peter Bondra.
