The Vancouver Canucks are exploring trade options for forward Chris Higgins, general manager Jim Benning confirmed Sunday.
"As part of our transition to a younger team, I can confirm we’re exploring trade options for Chris Higgins so we can create more roster space for our younger players to develop," Benning said in a statement. "Chris is a quality person who has been an important member of our team for nearly five seasons. Our focus has been on finding a positive new situation for him and we will continue to do so."
Selected by the Montreal Canadiens with the 14th pick in the 2002 NHL Draft, Higgins has two goals and three points in 25 games for Vancouver this season, and 164 goals and 332 points in 703 NHL games with the Canadiens, New York Rangers, Calgary Flames, Florida Panthers and Canucks.
Higgins, 32, played Saturday in a 3-2 overtime loss against the Tampa Bay Lightning, but was a healthy scratch against Carolina on Wednesday.
"It's a tough day for our organization," coach Willie Desjardins told the Canucks website. "Chris has been a great part of this organization and he's a first class individual."
Vancouver acquired forward Emerson Etem, 23, from the New York Rangers on Friday, another young player who likely would take ice time from Higgins. Etem will make his Canucks debut Monday against the Florida Panthers, Desjardins said.
