Canucks looking to trade veteran forward Higgins as part of youth movement

VANCOUVER - The Vancouver Canucks are looking to trade veteran forward Chris Higgins as part of their plan to move forward with a younger roster.

Canucks general manager Jim Benning confirmed in a statement Sunday that the team is shopping Higgins.

Higgins has struggled this season after breaking his foot in training camp, putting up just two goals and an assist in 25 games.

He was a healthy scratch on Vancouver's game against Carolina on Wednesday before returning to the lineup Saturday against Tampa Bay.

Higgins still has another year left on his four-year deal that has an annual cap hit is US$2.5 million. He has 164 goals and 168 assists in 703 career NHL games.

The Canucks have been transitioning to a younger lineup with forwards such as Jared McCann, Jake Virtanen and Bo Horvat expected to play an expanded role.

Vancouver also recently acquired 23-year-old forward Emerson Etem in a trade with the New York Rangers.
