Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin scores goal No. 497
Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin inched closer to history Thursday, scoring his 497th NHL goal in the first period against the New York Islanders.

NEW YORK -- Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin inched closer to history Thursday, scoring his 497th NHL goal in the first period against the New York Islanders.

Ovechkin scored at 15:45 with a wrist shot from the right circle, beating Islanders goalie Jaroslav Halak to give the Capitals a 2-0 lead. It proved to be the winning goal in a 4-1 victory.

Ovechkin, 30, is three away from becoming the 43rd player in NHL history to score at least 500 goals.

He has 22 goals this season, which leads Washington.

In 799 NHL games, Ovechkin has 497 goals and 930 points. He's scored at least 20 goals in each of his first 10 NHL seasons, including 50-plus goals six times, and a career-high 65 in 2007-08.
