HOLTBY, TALBOT LEADS CLUBS TO WINS WITH 40-SAVE OUTINGS

Braden Holtby (44 saves) of the Washington Capitals and Cam Talbot (47 saves) of the Edmonton Oilers each guided their respective teams to victory with a pair of stellar performances:

* Holtby made a season-high 44 saves and T.J. Oshie (2-1—3) scored twice in the third period to lead the Capitals to a 9-1-1 record in their past 11 games, as well as a 6-1-1 record in their past eight as visitors.

* At 21-6-2 (44 points), the Capitals leapfrogged the idle Canadiens (20-8-3, 43 points) for sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference standings:

* Holtby's 44 saves were two shy of his career high of 46 from Nov. 17, 2013 vs. the St. Louis Blues (4-1 W). Per Elias, Holtby is 5-1-0 in six career regular-season games where he has made 40 or more saves.

* Holtby – who leads all goaltenders with 19 wins – won his third straight decision and extended his career-high personal point streak to 12 games (11-0-1). Per Elias, that it is the longest such run by a Capitals goaltender since Jan. 13 – March 24, 2010 (Jose Theodore: 17-0-2).

* Oshie registered his first three-point outing of the season. Nicklas Backstrom (1-2—3) had three points and has 10-17—27 since making his season debut on Oct. 17 (26 GP).

* John Carlson (1-1—2) scored the game-winning goal at 7:04 of the first period – his second such goal of the season – and has 1-3—4 in his past three games.

* The Capitals are 11-4-1 in their past 16 regular-season road games vs. PIT dating to Jan. 21, 2008 (PIT: 5-9-2).

* Talbot made a career-high 47 saves and Andrej Sekera scored 41 seconds into overtime to lead the Oilers to their sixth consecutive victory.

* Talbot – who made his first start since Nov. 27 – eclipsed his previous career high of 38 saves, most recently achieved March 15 vs. the Florida Panthers while playing for the New York Rangers (2-1 W).

* Sekera scored his fourth career game-winning goal and his second career overtime goal, each of which has been scored against the Boston Bruins. The other: March 30, 2008 vs. BOS with the Buffalo Sabres (2-1 OT W).

* Jordan Eberle (1-2—3) posted his first three-point game of the season and has 4-3—7 in his past five games after posting 3-0—3 in his first 13 games since making his season debut on Nov. 6. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (1-1—2) has two multi-point games in his past three games (2-2—4).

* The Oilers have won their past three games against the Bruins – all requiring extra time – on the heels of a 13-game skid in the head-to-head series dating to Nov. 6, 2001 (0-10-3).

* The Oilers earned their first win in Boston since Nov. 7, 1996 (6-0 W), ending a 10-game skid since (0-8-2).

Despite suffering an overtime loss, the Bruins extended their point streak against the Oilers to 16 games dating to Nov. 6, 2001 (13-0-3). Per Elias, that is the second-longest active point streak by an NHL team against one opponent:

The Sabres and Senators overcame deficits to earn regulation wins on Monday, respectively ending the Detroit Red Wings' point streak at 13 games (8-0-5) and the Los Angeles Kings' at nine (7-0-2):

* Facing a 1-0 deficit in the third period, Ryan O'Reilly (1-0—1) tied the contest with 4:14 remaining and Johan Larsson (1-0—1) potted his first career game-winner just over a minute later and the Sabres rallied past the Red Wings, their first regulation win at Joe Louis Area since March 6, 1994 (3-2 W). O'Reilly – who leads the Sabres in goals, assists and points with 11-17—28 this season – stretched his point streak to eight games (4-7—11), equaling his career high from March 14-30 with the Colorado Avalanche (5-8—13). Chad Johnson made 32 saves – including denying Tomas Jurco on a second-period penalty shot attempt and a diving stop on Gustav Nyquist in the final seconds – to pick up his fourth win in his past six decisions.

* Down 1-0, the Ottawa Senators scored four consecutive goals in the second period and held off a Kings rally to earn a 5-3 victory. Mike Hoffman (2-1—3) had his third three-point game of the season – which included scoring the game-winner at 14:34 of the second period – and leads the Senators in goals (17) and game-winning goals (3). Erik Karlsson (1-1—2) leads the Senators with 7-27—34 this season (31 GP); his 34 points also lead all defensemen, and his 27 assists are tied for the NHL-lead among all skaters with Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane.

LIKE A ROLLING STONE

Senators forward Mark Stone (0-1—1) had an assist to reach the 100-point milestone (37-63—100) in his 132nd career regular-season game.

* Per Elias, Stone became the fourth-fastest in Senators history to reach 100 points – in terms of regular-season games played – among players who began their NHL careers with Ottawa. The fastest: Alexei Yashin (107 GP), Daniel Alfredsson (123 GP) and Jason Spezza (124 GP).

* Kings coach Darryl Sutter coached his 1,151st career game, tying Marc Crawford for 15th on the NHL's all-time list among head coaches.

* Mike Sullivan made his team debut as coach of the Penguins.

* Blue Jackets goaltender Joonas Korpisalo turned aside 27 of 29 shots in his NHL debut.

* Red Wings defenseman Mike Green skated in the 600th game of his NHL career.

Lightning forward Brian Boyle (1-0—1) broke a 1-1 tie at 6:13 of the third period with his first shorthanded goal of the season to lead the Lightning past the Blue Jackets, their fourth victory in their past six games. Lightning goalie Ben Bishop turned aside all but one of 26 shots he faced to pick up his fourth win in his past five decisions. He is 13-9-2 overall (1.92 GAA, .931 SV%, 1 SO). ... Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron (0-1—1) stretched his point streak to five games (1-5—6). ... Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin (1-0—1) has 10-34—44 in 31 career regular-season games vs. WSH. ... Senators forward Mika Zibanejad (1-2—3) ended a four-game scoring drought with his second three-point outing of the season. ... Senators goaltender Craig Anderson (33 saves) made his 15th straight start and is 14-9-3 (2.84 GAA, .915 SV%, 2 SO). ... Glen Sonmor, who coached the Minnesota North Stars to the Stanley Cup Final and played briefly for the New York Rangers, passed away Monday at the age of 86. ...
