LAST-MINUTE GOAL HELPS STARS TAME HURRICANES

Ahead 5-1 after 40 minutes, the Stars yielded four straight Hurricanes goals before Patrick Sharp scored the winner with 18.5 seconds remaining in regulation to lift Dallas to an 11-1-1 record in their last 13 meetings at American Airlines Center dating to March 21, 1997 (CAR/HFD: 1-7-5).

* At 21-5-2 (44 points), the League-leading Stars are off to their best 28-game start to a season in franchise history.

* Tyler Seguin (1-3-4), Jamie Benn (1-3-4) and John Klingberg (0-3-3) combined for 2-9-11. Seguin posted his second four-point effort this season (also Oct. 17 at FLA: 2-2-4), while Benn registered his first such performance since April 11 vs. NSH when he collected 3-1-4 in the season finale to win the Art Ross Trophy. Klingberg, who set a career high for assists in a game, ranks second among defensemen with 5-25-30 this season and also ranks third in the entire NHL in assists.

* Via Elias, Seguin (eight) and Benn (five) have more performances of at least four points since 2013-14 (when Seguin joined the team). So far this season, Benn (19-20-39) leads the League in goals and is tied with Seguin (15-24-39) for second in points.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: STARS AND HURRICANES

A closer look at the high-scoring affair in Dallas (via Elias):

* The Stars jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening period before surrendering four goals in the final period. The last time both teams scored at least four goals each in a period in the same game was Dec. 28, 2014 (TOR: 4 goals in second period, FLA: 4 goals in third period).

* The Stars won a game in which their opponent tied the game after trailing by four goals for the first time since Jan. 5, 1996 vs. WPG. In that game, the Stars also surrendered a 4-0 lead before Grant Ledyard scored the game-winning goal at 19:40 of the third period in a 5-4 win.

* The Hurricanes tied a game in which the trailed by at least four goals for the first time since Jan. 15, 2009 vs. TOR (trailed 4-0, tied 4-4, lost 6-4).

* Carolina's Justin Faulk (2-0-2) sparked his team's comeback with two power-play goals in the third period. He paces all defensemen with 11 goals this season (28 GP), all scored via the power play. No other player has more than nine such goals this season.

* Faulk is the first player to score 11 consecutive power-play goals in a season since Anaheim's Teemu Selanne scored 13 straight goals on the man-advantage from Oct. 25 – Dec. 3, 2008.

* Faulk is also the first defenseman to score 11 power-play goals in a season for the Hurricanes since the franchise relocated to Carolina in 1997-98. Only one defenseman has accomplished the feat for the Hurricanes/Whalers franchise: Risto Siltanen – 12 PPG (75 GP in 1983-84).

MINUTE TO WIN IT

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Stars scored a go-ahead goal in the final 20 seconds of regulation for the first time since Oct. 16, 2014 vs. PIT (Tyler Seguin: 19:57). It also marked the second straight game for the Hurricanes in which the tie-breaking goal was scored in the final minute of regulation (also Sunday vs. ARI: Justin Faulk at 19:43). Overall, there have been six go-ahead goals scored in the final 60 seconds of regulation in the NHL this season (all stood as GWG):

KANE NOTCHES 600TH POINT TO EXTEND POINT STREAK IN BLACKHAWKS' WIN

Patrick Kane scored into an empty net with 1:36 remaining in the third period to record his 600th career point, extend his point streak to 23 games (14-23-37) and lead the Blackhawks past the Predators in the first half of a home-and-home series.

* Kane, who also found the scoresheet in the final two minutes of regulation Sunday, extended his own records for the longest point streak in Blackhawks history and the longest such run by a U.S.-born player in NHL history.

* The first overall selection in the 2007 NHL Draft, Kane became the first player from his draft class to record 600 career points (222-378-600 in 604 GP). He has collected 52 more goals and 202 more points than the next-closest player selected that year (Jamie Benn: 170-228-398 in 454 GP).

* Kane also became the second player from any team to register a point streak of 23 or more games since the 1992-93 season. The only other player to accomplish the feat in that span is Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby, who had a point in 25 consecutive games from Nov. 5 – Dec. 28, 2010 (26-24-50).

* Kane, who has a point against 15 different teams during his run, leads the NHL with 17-26-43 overall. That includes at least one point in 26 of 28 games.

* Teuvo Teravainen (1-1-2), Andrew Shaw (1-1-2) and Niklas Hjalmarsson (0-2-2) all registered multiple points for the Blackhawks, who improved to 10-3-1 at United Center this season.

HOME SWEET HOME

The Capitals and Flames both earned victories to extend their home winning streaks:

* Alex Ovechkin tied the game at 10:51 of third period and T.J. Oshie scored the game-winning goal in the shootout to lift the Capitals to their fifth consecutive victory at Verizon Center and eighth straight game overall with a point (7-0-1). Washington ranks second in the NHL in home wins (11; tied w/ LAK) and home points (23). With an overall record of 19-5-2 (40 points), the Capitals also are off to their best 26-game start to a season in franchise history and rank second in the Eastern Conference behind the idle Canadiens (19-6-3, 41 points).

* Michael Frolik scored the eventual game-winning goal at 2:27 of the second period to lead the Flames to their seventh consecutive win at Scotiabank Saddledome after a 1-5-0 start to the season on home ice. It is their longest home winning streak since Feb. 23 – March 27, 2013 (8-0-0) and three games shy of the longest such stretch in franchise history (Nov. 7 – Dec. 12, 2006: 10-0-0). The Flames also improved to 7-2-0 in their last nine meetings with the Sharks dating to Jan. 30, 2014 (SJS: 2-5-2).

AROUND THE RINKS

* Alec Martinez (1-1-2) scored his first-career overtime goal in the regular season with 26.5 seconds remaining in overtime to help the Kings push their point streak to seven games (6-0-1). Martinez scored two series-clinching goals in the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs, both in overtime – first in Game 7 of the Western Conference Final at CHI and then in double overtime of Game 6 in the Final vs. NYR to lift the Kings to their second championship in three years. Jeff Carter tied the game at 18:33 of the third period to extend his point streak to seven games (2-5-7).

* Jaroslav Halak made 43 saves through overtime and denied all three shootout attempts to help the Islanders push their overall point streak to eight games (6-0-2) and improve to 6-1-0 in their last seven meetings with the Flyers dating to Jan. 20, 2014 (PHI: 1-2-4). Halak moved to 9-3-0 in 12 career appearances against the Flyers (2.51 GAA, .921 SV%, 2 SO).

* Alexander Steen and Kevin Shattenkirk both tallied 1-1-2 as the Blues scored four unanswered goals to extend their point streak against the Coyotes to 10 games dating to March 7, 2013, including six straight wins (9-0-1; ARI: 1-8-1). Steen had his 40th career game-winning goal (first this season), while Shattenkirk has tallied points in 10 of his last 12 outings (4-9-13).

* The Senators scored three unanswered goals in the third period – including the tying score by Kyle Turris (1-1-2) just 51 seconds into the period and game-winning goal by Mike Hoffman – to earn their third win their last four outings and move to 23-9-1 all-time at BB&T Center. Hoffman, who ranks fourth in the NHL with 15 goals, has 11-4-15 in his last 11 games including two decisive goals. Mark Stone (0-3-3) equaled career highs for assists and points in a game.

* Nazem Kadri scored in the fifth round of the shootout to lead the Maple Leafs to their second consecutive victory. The game was the first against his old team for Maple Leafs general manager Lou Lamoriello, who spent 28 years in the same role with the Devils – the longest tenure for a general manager with one team in NHL history.

MILESTONES & BENCHMARKS

* Panthers goaltender Roberto Luongo (19 SV) played in his 887th career game to surpass Tony Esposito (886 GP) for sole possession of seventh place on the NHL's all-time games played list among goaltenders. Glenn Hall (906 GP) holds the sixth position.

* Hurricanes teammates Phillip Di Giuseppe (3 GP) and Jaccob Slavin (9 GP) both scored their first career NHL goal. Via Elias, the last time two players from the club scored their first NHL goal in the same game was Feb. 26, 2003 at PHX (Tomas Kurka and Mike Zigomanis).

* Panthers forward Logan Shaw, a third-round selection (76th overall) in the 2011 NHL Draft, also scored his first NHL goal/point (7 GP).

* Capitals head coach Barry Trotz earned his 621st career victory to surpass Bryan Murray (620) for sole possession of 10th place on the NHL's all-time wins list among head coaches.

* Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby (21 SV) played in his 200th NHL game (all w/ WSH) to become the third goaltender in franchise history to reach the milestone, after Olie Kolzig (711 GP) and Don Beaupre (269 GP). He also earned his League-leading 17th win of the season.

* Red Wings forward Pavel Datsyuk (900) and Capitals forward Nicklas Backstrom (600) also played in milestone games.

* Defenseman Zbynek Michalek played in his 565th career game with the Coyotes to surpass Randy Carlyle (564 GP) for sole possession of second place in franchise history among defensemen. Teppo Numminen leads that list with 1,098 career games played for the Coyotes/Jets.

* Capitals forward Justin Williams (1-0-1) registered his 600th career point (235-365-600).

LOOSE PUCKS

Despite suffering a shootout loss, the Red Wings extended their point streak to 11 games (7-0-4), their longest such sun since March 11 – April 3, 2010 (10-0-2) . . . Blues forward Vladimir Tarasenko (1-0-1) ranks third in the League with 16 goals, including eight in his last eight games at Scottrade Center . . . Defenseman Mike Green (23:38 TOI), who compiled 113-247-360 in 575 GP with the Capitals (2005-15), played his first game in Washington since joining the Red Wings in the offseason . . . Islanders forward Frans Nielsen (2-0-2) posted his third multi-goal game of the season . . . Capitals forward Nicklas Backstrom (2-5-7) and Predators defenseman Roman Josi (3-4-7) extended their point streaks to six and five games, respectively . . . Sharks forward Logan Couture had an assist in his return from a 23-game absence . . . Flyers captain Claude Giroux (1-1-2) has 13-27-40 in 35 career games against the Islanders, including 8-14-22 in 17 games at Wells Fargo Center . . . Maple Leafs goaltender Garrett Sparks made 25 saves through overtime – and added four stops in the shootout – to improve to 3-1-0 in his NHL career . . . Devils forward Kyle Palmieri (1-0-1) has 12 goals this season, including five in his last six games . . .
