McDavid unable to play first game in Toronto but says rehab is ahead of schedule

TORONTO - Connor McDavid's first NHL game in Toronto will have to wait, but the Edmonton Oilers rookie remains ahead of schedule in his rehab from a broken left clavicle.

McDavid has been out since suffering the injury Nov. 3 against the Philadelphia Flyers.

The 18-year-old, who was the No. 1 pick in the 2015 draft, didn't specify how soon he could be back but said he was pain free and on the way to returning to the Oilers' lineup.

McDavid had five goals and seven assists in his first 13 games before being injured when he slammed into the boards.

Monday would have been the Newmarket, Ont., native's first professional game at Air Canada Centre, the building he helped Canada win world junior gold in a year ago.

The World Cup of Hockey next fall will likely be his next chance.
