Penguins D-man Maatta sustained upper-body injury
Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Olli Maatta was injured midway through the second period Tuesday against the Minnesota Wild at Consol Energy Center.

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Olli Maatta sustained an upper-body injury against the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday and spent the night in the hospital, the Penguins said Wednesday.

Maatta remained in the hospital Wednesday and was to be re-examined later in the day. The Penguins said Maatta's injury was not related to any injuries he has sustained in the past.

Maatta did not sustain any internal injuries, TSN reported, but had soft tissue and muscle damage to his midsection, the result of being checked into the boards near the Minnesota bench with its door open by Wild forward Nino Niederreiter.

Niederreiter checked Maatta midway through the second period of a 4-3 Penguins win. Maatta remained on the ice while being treated by trainers before he was helped down the runway.

"It's unfortunate, the whole situation; I pushed him then I went for a change," Niederreiter said. "I think he toe-picked at the same time and the door was open, and he obviously fell into the boards. That's what happened. You never want to see anything like that. I feel bad, but it's unfortunate."

Maatta, who missed 62 games last season with various injuries, has two goals and four points in his third NHL season, playing at times on Pittsburgh's top defensive pairing with Kris Letang.
