Mike Babcock will be announced as coach of Team Canada for the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, according to a report by ESPN.com.
A press conference to announce Babcock, 52, as coach is tentatively scheduled for Toronto's MasterCard Centre for Hockey Excellence on Thursday. Joel Quenneville of the Chicago Blackhawks and Claude Julien of the Boston Bruins also will be part of the coaching staff, according to the report.
Babcock, who is in his first season as coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs, coached Canada to Olympic gold in Vancouver in 2010 and in Sochi in 2014.
Team Canada general manager Doug Armstrong is responsible for all staff and personnel decisions, with input from Marc Bergevin, Rob Blake, Ken Holland, Bob Murray, Tom Renney and Scott Salmond.
Babcock is the only coaching member of the Triple Gold Club with a Stanley Cup (2008), Olympic gold medal (2014, 2010) and World Championship gold (2004).
Ken Hitchcock, Jacques Lemaire, Lindy Ruff and Julien served as assistants for Babcock at the Olympics in Vancouver and Sochi.
