Senators' Stone suspended two games by NHL for hit to head of Red Wings' Ferraro

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The NHL has suspended Ottawa Senators forward Mark Stone two games for an illegal hit to the head of Detroit Red Wings forward Landon Ferraro.

Stone will miss games Tuesday at the Montreal Canadiens and Thursday against the Winnipeg Jets.

The Senators' leading scorer hit Ferraro in the head with his right shoulder in the second period of a 5-3 loss to the Red Wings on Saturday.

Stone, who has no history of supplemental discipline in his brief career, forfeits US$37,634.40.

Ferraro was not injured on the play.

In announcing the suspension, director of player safety Patrick Burke said the league accepted Stone's explanation that he was trying to get a loose puck and then hit Ferraro to prevent an odd-man rush.

"The onus is on him to deliver that hit in a legal manner," Burke said in the suspension video, calling it a "reckless shoulder to the head of an opponent."
