Babcock disappointed in Maple Leafs penalty kill after 4-3 loss to Coyotes

TORONTO - Max Domi and Shane Doan had power-play goals in the first period as the Arizona Coyotes held on to edge the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 on Monday night.

Kyle Chipchura added a power-play goal in the third for the Coyotes (5-3-1), while Klas Dahlbeck also scored for Phoenix, which defeated the Leafs (1-5-2) for a third straight time dating back to last season.

Mike Smith made 24 saves to improve to 4-2-1 on the season.

Shawn Matthias, James van Riemsdyk and Morgan Rielly had the Toronto goals while James Reimer made 20 saves for his first regulation loss of the season (1-1-1).

Rielly got the Leafs to within one at 17:34 of the third with Reimer pulled for an extra attacker, but Toronto was unable to find the equalizer.

Domi opened the scoring at 6:31 of the first period, on a power play, beating Reimer high glove-side for his fourth goal of the season. The goal puts Domi ahead of Edmonton's Connor McDavid for the rookie scoring lead with 10 points.

The Coyotes appeared to take a 2-0 lead at 11:21 of the first when Martin Hanzal re-directed a Michael Stone point shot past Reimer, but the goal was waved off due to a high stick.

Hanzal left the game with a lower body injury during the first intermission and did not return.

Matthias tied it at 1-1 at 13:08 of the opening period putting home the rebound off of a Brad Boyes shot for his first of the season.

With van Riemsdyk off for cross checking, Doan put home his second of the season tapping a Mikkel Boedker feed into a wide open net at 14:59.

Dahlbeck gave the Coyotes a 3-1 lead at 7:38 of the second beating Reimer short side for his second of the season.

After Chipchura gave the Coyotes a 4-1 lead with van Riemsdyk off for roughing at 7:00 of the third, the Leafs' forward cut Arizona's lead in half with his fourth at 9:05.

Notes: The Leafs announced prior to puck drop that centre Nick Spaling suffered a lower body injury in Toronto's 5-3 loss to Montreal on Oct. 24 and is listed as day-to-day. The announced attendance Monday night was 18, 944.
