MARKOV, CANADIENS EXTEND RECORD STREAK TO OPEN SEASON

Andrei Markov (1-4—5) had career-highs in assists and points to help the Montreal Canadiens defeat the Buffalo Sabres 7-2 and improve to 8-0-0, their best start in their 98-year NHL history. The Canadiens, who remain the only team without a loss of any kind this season, improved to 5-1-0 in their last six games at BUF dating to April 11, 2013.

* The Canadiens became the second team in NHL history to begin a season with eight consecutive victories, all in regulation. The other: BUF in 1975-76.

* The Canadiens won eight consecutive games in regulation for the first time since Oct. 24 to Nov. 11, 1992 (8-0-0).

* The Canadiens won their first five road games to begin a season for the first time in franchise history.

* Markov became the first Canadiens defenseman to record five or more points in a game since Sheldon Souray had 1-5—6 on Jan. 10, 2004 at PIT.

KUZNETSOV LEADS CAPITALS TO FIFTH STRAIGHT VICTORY

Evgeny Kuznetsov (3-2—5) had his first career hat trick and a career-high five points to lead the Washington Capitals to a 7-4 win against the Edmonton Oilers for their fifth consecutive win.

* According to Elias, at 23 years, 157 days old, Kuznetsov was the youngest member of the Capitals to have five points in a game since teammate Nicklas Backstrom posted 1-4—5 on Feb. 4, 2010 at NYR (22 years, 73 days old).

* John Carlson (0-3—3) tied a career-high in assists/points and extended his point streak to a career-high five games (2-6—8).

* Backstrom (1-1—2) – who made his season debut on Oct. 17 vs. CAR – has 4-3—7 in his first four games. Backstrom has 5-6—11 in nine games vs. EDM.

* Alex Ovechkin (0-2—2) has at least one point in each of his first six games of the season (5-4—9). Ovechkin has 9-7—16 in 11 games vs. EDM.

* ICYMI: Ovechkin surprised Kuznetsov with a towel full of shaving cream following the game.

QUICK LEADS KINGS TO FOURTH STRAIGHT WIN

Jonathan Quick turned aside all 40 shots he faced to lead the Los Angeles Kings to a 3-0 win against the Carolina Hurricanes, their fourth consecutive victory following an 0-3-0 start.

* Quick is 8-0-2 in 10 regular-season games where has made 40 or more saves and had the 38th shutout of his career. Quick ranks fourth among active goaltenders in shutouts, trailing only FLA's Roberto Luongo (68), NYR's Henrik Lundqvist (55) and PIT's Marc-Andre Fleury (39).

* Quick moved into a tie with Tom Barrasso for third on the NHL's all-time shutouts list among American-born goaltenders, trailing only John Vanbiesbrouck (40) and Frank Brimsek (40).

* The Kings improved to 5-0-0 in their last five home games vs. CAR dating to Oct. 17, 2008.

AROUND THE RINKS

* Mark Giordano (2-1—3) equaled a career-high in points, which included scoring the game-winner at 3:12 of overtime, to lead the Calgary Flames to a 3-2 win against the Detroit Red Wings. With four career overtime goals, Giordano ranks tied for third on the Flames all-time overtime goals list, trailing only forwards Jarome Iginla (6) and Theo Fleury (5). The Flames are 6-0-1 in their past seven games vs. Atlantic Division opponents dating to Jan. 27 vs. BUF.

* Ondrej Palat scored 36 seconds into overtime to lead the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 4-3 win against the Winnipeg Jets. According to Elias, Palat's goal was the fastest by a Lightning player to begin an overtime period since teammate Steven Stamkos scored 30 seconds into overtime on Dec. 15, 2011 vs. CGY (5-4 OT W).

* The Boston Bruins scored four consecutive goals, including the game-winner by Ryan Spooner (1-1—2) at 8:09 of the third, en route to their 5-3 win against the New York Islanders. Jonas Gustavsson made 23 saves to improve to 2-0-0 in his first two starts with the club (2.50 goals-against average, .896 save percentage). The Bruins are 3-0-0 on the road this season.

STARTING THE SEASON STRONG

Bruins forward David Krejci scored an empty-net goal and Jets forward Blake Wheeler scored a shorthanded goal to each extend his season-opening point streak to seven games (5-7—12 and 4-5—9, respectively).

* Krejci is the first Bruins player to have at least one point in each of their first seven or more games of a season since 1992-93, when Joe Juneau (7-15—22) and Dmitri Kvartalnov (12-10—22) did so through the first 14 games of the season from Oct. 8 – Nov. 12, 1992.

* Wheeler is the second player in Jets/Atlanta Thrashers history to have at least one point in each of their first seven games of a season. The other: ATL's Donald Audette in 2000-01 (7-7—14).

MILESTONES & BENCHMARKS

* With his five-point game, Markov eclipsed 500 points (109-392—501 in 854 GP) and became the third defenseman in franchise history to reach the milestone. The others: Larry Robinson (197-686—883 in 1,202 GP) and Guy Lapointe (166-406—572 in 777 GP).

* Bruins forward Joonas Kemppainen (1-1—2) scored his first NHL goal and had the first assist of his NHL career (6 GP). Oilers forward Anton Slepyshev (0-1—1) had the first assist/point of his NHL career (7 GP).

* Lightning goaltender Ben Bishop made 33 saves to earn his 100th career NHL win (100-46-17, 2.38 GAA, .918 save percentage, 12 shutouts).

* Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara (1,200 GP), Canadiens defenseman Tom Gilbert (600 GP), Lightning forward Steven Stamkos (500 GP) and Islanders defenseman Johnny Boychuk (400 GP) all skated in milestone games.
