LaFontaine to play part in honoring military hero
Hockey Hall of Fame member Pat LaFontaine will play a part in remembering American hero, Lt. Michael P. Murphy, on Saturday during Military Appreciation Day at Twin Rinks at Eisenhower in East Meadow, Long Island.

Hockey Hall of Fame member Pat LaFontaine will play a part in remembering American hero, Lt. Michael P. Murphy, on Saturday during Military Appreciation Day at Twin Rinks at Eisenhower in East Meadow, N.Y.

LaFontaine will present Dan and Maureen Murphy, the parents of the Navy Seal, with a No. 16 jersey on the ice at approximately 4:45 p.m., prior to the opening faceoff of an Eastern Hockey League game between the New York Bobcats and New York Applecore.

Murphy was an ice hockey player from Long Island and one of the Navy Seals depicted in the 2013 film "Lone Survivor." Born in Smithtown, N.Y., and raised in Patchogue, N.Y., Murphy died at 29 in Afghanistan on June 28, 2005. He wore jersey No. 16 when he played hockey, as did LaFontaine.

"It is my privilege to participate in this event honoring Lt. Michael P. Murphy and his family for the ultimate sacrifice they have made on behalf of our nation," LaFontaine said. "It will be a special moment paying tribute to a true hero who displayed valor and undaunted courage to defend our country."

Murphy posthumously received the Medal of Honor for his courage that led to the rescue of Navy Seal Marcus Luttrell.

Beginning at 2 p.m., youth players, families and fans will have an opportunity to attempt the Murph Challenge Workout, which includes runs, pushups, pullups and squats. Pregame ceremonies will begin afterward when Murphy's parents will address those in attendance.

Admission to the game is free, but a $5 donation to the Lt. Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Fund is encouraged.
