CONDON EARNS WIN IN NHL DEBUT

Mike Condon made 20 saves in his NHL debut to backstop the Montreal Canadiens past the Ottawa Senators in the first game between the teams since the opening round of the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs, a six-game series victory by Montreal.

* The 25-year-old Condon – a native of Needham, Mass. – spent 2014-15 with the Hamilton Bulldogs (AHL), where he was 23-19-6 with a 2.44 goals-against average, a .921 save percentage and four shutouts in 48 games.

* Tomas Plekanec scored twice in the first period – including the eventual game-winner on a breakaway late in the period – and has goals in back-to-back games (3-0—3).

* Newly named captain Max Pacioretty (0-1—1) has earned points in each of the Canadiens' first three games (2-2—4). He has 8-6—14 in his past 10 regular-season games vs. OTT.

MILESTONES & BENCHMARKS

* Senators goaltender Matthew O'Connor also made his NHL debut (31 saves, .912 save percentage). O'Connor, a native of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., spent the past three seasons with the Boston University Terriers (H-East), where he was 40-21-10 in 76 games. That included 25 wins, a 2.18 GAA, a .927 save percentage and one shutout through 35 games played in 2014-15 (all career highs).

* According to the Elias Sports Bureau, O'Connor and Condon were the first starting goaltenders to make their NHL debuts in the same game since Oct. 14, 1967 (Los Angeles' Wayne Rutledge and Philadelphia's Douglas Favell).

* Montreal forward Torrey Mitchell scored his first regular-season goal as a member of the Canadiens (17 GP).

* Senators teammates Milan Michalek (700 GP) and Erik Karlsson (400 GP) skated in milestone games.

Senators forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored the third shorthanded goal of his career. ... The daughters of Senators owner Eugene Melnyk thanked fans prior to puck-drop at Canadian Tire Centre for helping their father find a liver donor. ... ICYMI: Rogers Hometown Hockey made its first stop of the season in Kitchener, Ont. Throughout 2015-16, Sunday games will be broadcast from a different community rink in various towns across Canada. Included in each telecast will be local NHL player profiles, grassroots stories and local entertainment features.
