CANADIENS EDGE BRUINS IN WINTER CLASSIC PREVIEW

The Montreal Canadiens jumped to an early 3-0 lead – highlighted by a pair of second-period goals by Lars Eller – to defeat the Boston Bruins at TD Garden in the first preview of the 2016 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. The teams will play four more times this season, including twice – Nov. 7 and Dec. 9 at Montreal – before they take it outside to start the new year.

* Eller, who had a career-high seven game-winning goals in 2014-15, scored his first such goal of the season, 77 seconds after the Bruins unsuccessfully challenged a potential goal. The multi-goal effort was the fifth of his career and first since Oct. 1, 2013 (2-1—3 vs. TOR).

* Alex Galchenyuk (0-3—3) matched a career high for assists/points in a game. Alexander Semin (0-2—2) also had multiple assists for his first points in a Canadiens uniform.

* Carey Price made 19 saves to improve to 22-8-3 with a 2.37 goals-against average, .923 save percentage and one shutout in 34 career regular-season appearances against the Bruins.

* Montreal has won 11 of the past 12 regular-season games against Boston since March 3, 2013 (BOS: 1-9-2), including seven consecutive wins at TD Garden.

* ICYMI: Both teams wore Winter Classic toques during warmup.

YOUTH, EXPERIENCE PROPEL PANTHERS IN OPENER

Powered by 22-year-old Vincent Trocheck (1-3—4) and 43-year-old Jaromir Jagr (2-0—2), the Panthers scored seven times – including four goals before the seven-minute mark of the first period – to rout the Philadelphia Flyers and win their season opener.

* Per Elias, the Panthers set a modern-day NHL record (since 1943-44) for the fastest four goals to start a season, scoring four times in the opening 6:46 of the game.

* Trocheck triggered the offense with his goal 1:23 after the opening face-off. Elias says that was the fastest season-opening goal in Panthers history, besting the previous mark set by Pavel Bure in 1999-00 (3:28 of first period vs. WSH).

* Jagr, who had his 123rd career multi-goal game, has 47 goals and 118 points in 94 career appearances against the Flyers. Elias says those are his second-highest career totals against a single opponent (61 goals, 153 points vs. NYI). Overall, Jagr has 13-26—39 in 22 career season-opening games.

* Reilly Smith, who was acquired from the Bruins in the offseason, scored twice in his Panthers debut. Jussi Jokinen (1-1—2), Brandon Pirri (0-2—2) and Aleksander Barkov (0-2—2) also scored multiple points.

* Roberto Luongo made 38 saves for his 402nd career victory and to move within one win of tying Grant Fuhr (403) for ninth place on the NHL's all-time list.

OVECHKIN LIFTS CAPITALS IN SEASON OPENER

Tied 2-2 in the third period, Alex Ovechkin scored his first goal of the season and had the primary assist on Marcus Johansson's decisive tally to power the Capitals against the New Jersey Devils in their season-opener.

* Ovechkin has six goals and 12 points in 11 career season-opening games. Overall, the Capitals captain and last season's Maurice Richard Trophy winner, needs three points to reach 900 in his NHL career (476-421—897 in 761 GP).

* Jason Chimera scored while on the penalty kill midway through the first period. Per Elias, it was the first time in franchise history that Washington's first goal of a season was scored while shorthanded.

* The Capitals are 12-5-1 all-time in season-openers at home, including a 7-1-1 record in such games at Verizon Center.

RANGERS, BLACKHAWKS SWEEP HOME-AND-HOME SETS . . .

The defending Presidents' Trophy winning New York Rangers and Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks each completed sweeps of their back-to-back, home-and-home series.

* The Rangers opened a 5-0 lead on the Columbus Blue Jackets – highlighted by three goals in the opening 5:48, including two from rookie Oscar Lindberg (2-0—2) – en route to their third straight win. It is their first 3-0-0 start since 2008-09 when they tied a franchise record for consecutive wins to start a season (5-0-0).

* Lindberg has scored in each of the Rangers' first three games. He is the first rookie in Rangers history to score in each of their first three games of a season, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Alex Chiasson was the last NHL player to accomplish the feat (2013-14 w/ DAL).

* Henrik Lundqvist made 37 saves – including a sprawling paddle stop late in the middle frame – to improve to 5-0-0 in his past five appearances against the Blue Jackets.

* The Rangers are 10-3-1 in their past 14 games against the Blue Jackets since Oct. 24, 2008, including five straight wins (CBJ: 4-7-3).

* Artemi Panarin (1-2—3) and Patrick Kane (1-2—3) sparked the Blackhawks' offense with three points each to open a 4-0 lead en route to their fifth straight home win against the New York Islanders (since Jan. 9, 2011).

* Panarin, 23, spent the 2014-15 season in the KHL, compiling 26-36—62 in 54 games. He also won a silver medal with Team Russia at the 2015 IIHF World Championship (5-5—10 in 10 GP).

* Kane has points in each of his first three games this season, including back-to-back multi-point efforts (2-0—2 on Oct. 9 at NYI).

* Making his first appearance of 2015-16, Scott Darling made 28 saves – but fell 65 seconds short of his second career shutout – to improve to 10-4-0 in 15 career appearances (1.88 GAA, .938 SV%).

. . . JOHNNY HOCKEY SPOILS SWEEP IN VANCOUVER

Johnny Gaudreau (1-2—3) matched a career high with three points – capped by his first career overtime goal – to help the Calgary Flames avoid a sweep in their season-opening home-and-home set against the Vancouver Canucks.

* Gaudreau has three goals and eight points in seven career regular-season games against the Canucks. He also had two goals and six points in Calgary's Western Conference First Round series against Vancouver in the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs, including a goal and three points in the decisive sixth game.

* Gaudreau was a runner-up for the Calder Trophy last season after tying for the rookie scoring lead with Mark Stone, a fellow nominee (Gaudreau: 24-40—64 in 80 GP; Stone: 26-38—64 in 80 GP).

* The Flames have won each of their last two regular-season visits to Rogers Arena after dropping their previous eight games in the building (since March 31, 2012).

JONES, RINNE STYMIE OPPONENTS

San Jose Sharks goalie Martin Jones (27 saves) and Nashville Predators goalie Pekka Rinne (31 saves) each led their teams to 2-0 victories against the Anaheim Ducks and Edmonton Oilers, respectively. Each goalie has allowed one goal in winning each of their team's two games this season.

* Jones, who played his first two seasons with the Los Angeles Kings, are 18-11-2 with eight shutouts in 36 career appearances (1.90 GAA, .926 SV%)

* Jones is the fastest goaltender to earn eight career shutouts since Frank Brimsek earned his eighth in his 27th game with the Bruins in February 1939, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

* Patrick Marleau (2-0—2) scored his 88th career game-winning goal, which ranks third among active players (Jaromir Jagr: 129, Jarome Iginla: 94). Newcomer Joel Ward (0-2—2) assisted on each goal.

* Rinne earned his second straight shutout against the Oilers (Nov. 27, 2014: 1-0 OT W, Rinne 37 SV) and the 37th blank sheet of his career.

* Rinne – who has allowed one goal in winning both Nashville games this season – made his 383rd career appearance, tying Tomas Vokoun for the most games played by a goalie in Predators history (Rinne: 206-115-43; Vokoun: 161-159-46).

* Craig Smith scored his 10th career game-winning goal. Filip Forsberg scored the other goal; he had the overtime winner when Rinne last shut out the Oilers.

LANDESKOG CARRIES AVALANCHE TO VICTORY

Two nights after surrendering a three-goal lead in the third period, the Colorado Avalanche scored five unanswered goals – highlighted by two goals and four points from captain Gabriel Landeskog – to overcome a 3-1 deficit and win their seventh consecutive game against the Dallas Stars (since Jan. 27, 2014).

* Landeskog, who set a career high for points in a game, has seven goals and 17 points in 16 career games against the Stars. Nathan MacKinnon (1-2—3) equaled a personal best with three points.

* Semyon Varlamov made 30 saves, including 21 over the final two periods, to improve to 9-0-0 in nine starts against Dallas since the start of 2013-14.

* Varlamov earned his 107th victory with the Avalanche, tying Dan Bouchard for second on their all-time list (COL/QUE); his coach Patrick Roy ranks first with 262 wins.

SENS SURVIVE LEAFS RALLY

The Toronto Maple Leafs rallied from deficits of 3-0 and 4-3 to force extra time, but Ottawa Senators sophomore Mike Hoffman (0-1—1) scored the decisive goal in the shootout to lead Ottawa to victory in the first shootout of the season.

* Kyle Turris (1-1—2), Alex Chiasson and Milan Michalek gave Ottawa a 3-0 lead with three consecutive power-play goals in a span of 4:10 during the second period. The goals were the fastest three power-play goals in Senators history, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

* After their three-goal lead was erased, the Senators pulled ahead once more when Mark Stone scored his first goal of the season. He found the back of the net 26 times last season, second-most among rookies behind Hoffman (27 goals).

* Craig Anderson made 37 saves through overtime before stopping two of three shootout attempts. Reigning Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson matched a career-high with three assists.

AROUND THE RINKS

* Tied 1-1 in the second period, Minnesota Wild forwards Zach Parise and Charlie Coyle (2-0—2) scored 21 seconds apart to help them defeat the St. Louis Blues in their first game since the opening round of the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs, a six-game victory by Minnesota. Coyle's second goal was upheld by the referee after the Blues unsuccessfully challenged the original call. Devan Dubnyk made 30 saves, including 12 in the third period, to help Minnesota improve to 13-0-2 in 15 all-time home openers at Xcel Energy Center.

* Coyotes rookie Jordan Martinook scored the tie-breaking goal in the second period – the first goal of his NHL career and eventual game-winner – to propel the Coyotes past the Pittsburgh Penguins. Martinook, the 58th selection in the 2012 NHL Draft, skated in eight games with the Coyotes last season after making his NHL debut on Dec. 6, 2014 vs. BOS. Mike Smith made 27 saves to earn his second win of the season in as many days.

* With the score tied 1-1 in the second period, the Tampa Bay Lightning scored three unanswered goals, including the decisive goal by Nikita Kucherov with 26 seconds left in the middle period, to defeat the Buffalo Sabres. Tampa Bay has won five consecutive games against Buffalo since Dec. 4, 2014 and is 4-0-1 in its past five visits to First Niagara Center since Oct. 8, 2013. Ben Bishop made 24 saves to improve to 7-0-1 in eight career games vs. BUF (1.71 GAA, .933 SV%).

* Facing a 2-1 deficit at the outset of the third period, the Detroit Red Wings rallied for three straight goals – two by Teemu Pulkkinen (2-0—2) and the game-winner by Justin Abdelkader – to defeat the Carolina Hurricanes. Abdelkader has scored the game-winning goal in Detroit's first two games of the season. The Red Wings are 7-1-0 in their past eight games against the Hurricanes since March 24, 2012 and have won four straight regular-season games in Carolina since Oct. 4, 2013 (3-2 OT W).

MILESTONES & BENCHMARKS

* Coyotes forward Shane Doan skated in his 1,396th career game, passing Roman Hamrlik for sole possession of 34th on the NHL's all-time list.

* Avalanche forward Jarome Iginla scored his 179th career power-play goal, tying Mark Messier for 26th on the NHL's all-time list.

* Sharks defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic skated in the 672nd game of his NHL career and passed Mike Rathje for the most games played by a defenseman in franchise history.

* Stars rookie Mattias Janmark scored 20 seconds after the opening face-off. Elias says Janmark, who scored 1:39 into his NHL debut on Thursday, is the fourth Stars/Minnesota North Stars player to score in each of his first two NHL games (Neal Broten: March 31-April 4, 1981; Mike Modano: Oct. 5-7, 1989; and Brett Ritchie: Dec. 31-Jan. 3, 2015)

* Blackhawks defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk (1-1—2) scored his first NHL goal (21 GP). Hurricanes defenseman Noah Hanifin (0-1—1) earned his NHL career point (2 GP).

* Islanders goaltender Jean-Francois Berube (30 saves) and Panthers forward Connor Brickley each made their NHL debuts.

* Canadiens forward Tomas Plekanec (1-0—1) and Capitals defenseman Matt Niskanen (1-1—2) reached 500 and 200 career NHL points, respectively. Stars defenseman Jason Demers (0-2—2) eclipsed 100 career assists.

* Senators forward Kyle Turris (1-1—2) and Red Wings forward Justin Abdelkader each played in their 400th NHL game.

* Dougie Hamilton (CGY) and Phil Kessel (PIT) each scored their first goals with their new teams.

LOOSE PUCKS

Forward Justin Williams had two assists in his Capitals debut, while defenseman Brooks Orpik scored his first goal with Washington (79 GP) . . . Capitals defenseman Dmitry Orlov (0-1—1) had his first point since April 11, 2014 after missing the entire 2014-15 season because of injury . . . Red Wings goaltender Petr Mrazek made a regular-season career-high 44 saves. . . Red Wings forward Henrik Zetterberg (1-1—2) has 11 goals and 19 points in 14 career games against the Hurricanes . . .
