Roundup: Capitals score late, top Bruins in shootout

Alex Ovechkin had the tying goal with 2:34 remaining in the third period, and T.J. Oshie and Evgeny Kuznetsov scored in the shootout to give the Washington Capitals a 2-1 preseason win against the Boston Bruins at Verizon Center on Friday.

The Bruins took a 1-0 lead 4:06 into the game on a goal by Loui Eriksson and held it until Ovechkin finished a passing play from Oshie and Kuznetsov by beating Bruins backup goalie Jeremy Smith.

Washington killed a Boston power play during the 3-on-3 overtime.

Capitals goalie Braden Holtby, who relieved Philipp Grubauer after one period and made 23 saves through overtime, denied Ryan Spooner and David Krejci in the shootout.

Boston starter Tuukka Rask played the first two periods and made 15 saves. The Bruins finished the preseason 4-2-1 and open the regular season against the Winnipeg Jets at TD Garden on Oct. 8.

Washington (4-0-2) hosts the New York Islanders on Sunday in its final preseason game.

Red Wings 4, Maple Leafs 2: James van Riemsdyk scored for the Toronto Maple Leafs 1:09 into coach Mike Babcock's return to Joe Louis Arena, but Henrik Zetterberg and Brad Richards had third-period goals to give the Detroit Red Wings a win.

Babcock coached the Red Wings for 10 seasons before being hired by the Maple Leafs on May 20.

His return started well with van Riemsdyk's goal, but Detroit held a 2-1 lead 4:12 later after goals by Justin Abdelkader and Drew Miller.

A power-play goal by Toronto's Mark Arcobello with 32 seconds left in the second period tied it 2-2.

Zetterberg scored at 3:57 of the third period before Richards' goal into an empty net at 18:35.

Jimmy Howard made 31 saves for Detroit (5-0-2). James Reimer made 26 for Toronto (3-4-0).

The teams end their preseason schedules Saturday at Air Canada Centre, then play a regular-season game next Friday in Detroit.

Devils 3, Flyers 2 (SO): Jacob Josefson scored the tying goal with 3:31 remaining in the third period and the only goal in the shootout to give the New Jersey Devils a against the Philadelphia Flyers at Prudential Center in the preseason finale for each team.

Jakub Voracek gave the Flyers a 2-1 lead with a power-play goal 4:59 into the third period.

Jiri Tlusty, who signed with the Devils as a free agent in September, scored a power-play goal at 3:36 of the third to tie the game 1-1.

Ryan White's shorthanded goal put the Flyers ahead 11:03 into the second period.

Steve Mason made 29 saves and Claude Giroux had two assists for Philadelphia (3-2-2). The Flyers open the regular season Oct. 8 at the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Cory Schneider made 21 saves for New Jersey (3-4-0). The Devils open the regular season Oct. 9 at home against the Winnipeg Jets.

New Jersey was without injured forwards Patrik Elias (knee) and Kyle Palmieri (lower body).

Hurricanes 2, Penguins 1: Cam Ward made 34 saves, and the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins at PNC Arena in the preseason finale for each team.

Ward allowed a third-period goal by Pascal Dupuis but the Hurricanes (4-2-0) won their fourth consecutive game. Jordan Staal scored at 19:29 of the first period to put Carolina ahead, and James Wisniewski made it 2-0 at 2:59 of the third.

The Hurricanes open the regular season at the Nashville Predators on Oct. 8.

Marc-Andre Fleury made 28 saves for the Penguins, who finished the preseason 3-5-0. Pittsburgh opens the regular season at the Dallas Stars on Oct. 8.

Blue Jackets 6, Sabres 4: Lukas Sedlak and Dean Kukan scored 1:25 apart early in the first period, Oliver Bjorkstrand had two goals, and the Columbus Blue Jackets held on to defeat the Buffalo Sabres at First Niagara Center.

Sedlak opened the scoring by beating Robin Lehner 5:05 into the game, and Kukan made it 2-0 at 6:30. Markus Hannikainen's breakaway goal at 19:19 gave Columbus a 3-0 lead.

William Karlsson and Bjorkstrand scored on the Blue Jackets’ first two shots of the second period to push it to 5-0.

The Sabres scored four times in the third period before Bjorkstrand hit the empty net with 1:19 remaining. Jamie McGinn had two goals, and Zemgus Girgensons and Evander Kane scored for Buffalo.

Curtis McElhinney made 24 saves for Columbus, which is 4-2-1 entering its preseason finale against the Nashville Predators at home on Saturday.

Lehner made 20 saves for the Sabres, who finished the preseason 4-3-0.
