Roundup: Lundqvist helps Rangers edge Bruins
Henrik Lundqvist and the New York Rangers defeated the Boston Bruins as part of a four-game Wednesday in the NHL preseason.

Henrik Lundqvist made 39 saves to lead the New York Rangers to a 3-2 victory against the Boston Bruins at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday.

Lundqvist allowed a goal on the Bruins' first shot, a tip-in by Brett Connolly 40 seconds into the game, then stopped 38 consecutive shots before Connolly scored again with 1:57 left. He was at his best in the second period, when he stopped all 19 shots.

The Rangers tied the game 1-1 on Viktor Stalberg's goal at 16:27 of the second period, and J.T. Miller scored less than three minutes later to put New York ahead to stay. Rick Nash had a power-play goal at 5:21 of the third period that turned out to be the game-winner.

The regulation 60 minutes were followed by a 3-on-3 overtime in which neither team scored.

New York finished its preseason schedule with a 4-1-1 record; the Rangers open the regular season Oct. 7 at the Chicago Blackhawks (8 p.m. ET; NBCSN).

Jonas Gustavsson made 24 saves for Boston (4-2-0), which completes its preseason schedule Friday at the Washington Capitals.

Red Wings 7, Penguins 2: Andreas Athanasiou scored two goals for the Detroit Red Wings in their victory against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Consol Energy Center.

Athanasiou opened the scoring at 3:19 of the first period. Dylan Larkin and Brendan Smith also scored for Detroit in the opening 20 minutes.

Riley Sheahan and Justin Abdelkader scored in the second period to build the Red Wings lead to 5-0 before Daniel Sprong got the Penguins on the board with a power-play goal at 17:01.

Athanasiou, who also had an assist, scored his second goal at 11:50 of the third period after Beau Bennett had pulled the Penguins within 5-2 at 1:49 with a power-play goal.

Anthony Mantha's goal with 13 seconds left completed the scoring.

Red Wings goalie Petr Mrazek made 36 saves. Jeff Zatkoff made 15 for the Penguins, who were playing for the third time in as many nights.

Detroit (4-0-2) was 1-for-3 on the power play; Pittsburgh (3-4-0) was 2-for-5.

Hurricanes 4, Capitals 3 (SO): Nathan Gerbe scored in the fourth round of the shootout to give the Carolina Hurricanes the win against the Washington Capitals at PNC Arena.

Carolina rallied from a 3-1 deficit in the second period on goals 2:19 apart by Riley Nash and Gerbe. Elias Lindholm scored in the first period.

Alex Ovechkin scored 20 seconds into the game for the Capitals. Stanislav Galiev and Michael Latta also had goals.

Hurricanes goalie Eddie Lack played the entire game and made 31 saves.

Braden Holtby played the first two periods and allowed three goals on 23 shots. Justin Peters made four saves.

T.J. Oshie scored in the first round of the shootout for Washington (3-0-2). Jeff Skinner responded in the second round for Carolina (3-2-0).

Devils 4, Flyers 2: Travis Zajac scored two goals in the New Jersey Devils' win against the Philadelphia Flyers at Wells Fargo Center.

Chris Porter, who Philadelphia put on waivers earlier Wednesday, and Wayne Simmonds scored to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead after the first period.

Adam Henrique and Zajac scored in the second period to put New Jersey ahead 3-2. Zajac scored an empty-net goal with 32 seconds remaining.

Damon Severson and Jacob Josefson each had two assists for New Jersey. Michael Del Zotto assisted on both goals for Philadelphia (3-2-1).

Flyers goalie Michal Neuvirth made 15 saves on 18 shots before being relieved by Jason LaBarbera at the start of the third period. LaBarbera made saves on all eight shots he faced in the third. Josefson scored on LaBarbera in a demonstration of the NHL's new 3-on-3 overtime format after the puck took an odd bounce off the boards on a dump-in.

Keith Kinkaid made 27 saves for New Jersey (2-4-0).

The Devils were 1-for-5 on the power play; the Flyers were 1-for-3.
