Preseason roundup: Gibbons, Megna lead Rangers

Jayson Megna had two goals, Kevin Klein had three assists, and the New York Rangers scored three unanswered goals to defeat the New Jersey Devils 6-3 at Madison Square Garden.

Rangers forward Brian Gibbons opened the scoring at 1:21 of the first period. He also had two assists, including one on Megna's goal three minutes after his.

Devils forward Jordin Tootoo scored a power-play goal at 7:30 of the first period to make it 2-1.

Mike Sislo scored the Devils' second power-play goal at 16:47 of the second period to tie it 2-2, but Chris Kreider and Viktor Stalberg each scored in the final two minutes of the period to give the Rangers a 4-2 lead.

Rangers forward Oscar Lindberg scored at 14:43 of the third period. Devils defenseman Adam Larsson made it 5-3 when he scored New Jersey's third power-play goal, but Megna scored with 32 seconds left.

Antti Raanta, making his first start since being traded to the Rangers from the Chicago Blackhawks in June, made 11 saves. Magnus Hellberg stopped 12 of 14 shots in relief.

Devils goalie Cory Schneider made 10 saves on 12 shots before being relieved by Yann Danis, who allowed four goals on 11 shots.

Sabres 3, Wild 2: Jack Eichel scored a shorthanded goal with 5:44 remaining in the third period to give the Buffalo Sabres a win against the Minnesota Wild at Xcel Energy Center.

Eichel, the second pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, was making his professional debut. He earned his first point earlier in the period with an assist on Matt Moulson's goal to tie the game 2-2.

Jared Spurgeon gave the Wild a 1-0 lead at 13:12 of the first period before Sabres forward Nicolas Deslauriers scored with 1:32 left in the period to tie the game 1-1.

Mikael Granlund scored a power-play goal at 11:04 of the second period to give the Wild a 2-1 lead.

Chad Johnson made 15 saves on 17 shots in two periods for the Sabres; Nathan Lieuwen made three saves on three shots in the third period. Darcy Kuemper played the entire game for the Wild and had 16 saves.

Oilers 4, Flames 2: Connor McDavid had two assists in his professional debut to help the Edmonton Oilers to a win against the Calgary Flames at Rexall Place.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first period on goals by the Oilers’ Andrew Miller and the Flames’ Oliver Kylington. Markus Granlund's shorthanded goal gave the Flames a 2-1 lead in the second.

McDavid set up Leon Draisaitl on the power play in the third period with 6:25 remaining to tie it 2-2 before Anton Lander's shorthanded goal a minute later gave Edmonton a 3-2 lead. Nail Yakupov then scored an empty-net goal assisted by McDavid.

Cam Talbot made 13 saves and allowed one goal in one period for the Oilers. Laurent Brossoit allowed one goal on nine shots in the final two periods.

Karri Ramo made 21 saves and allowed a goal for the Flames; Mason McDonald allowed two goals on seven shots.

Oilers 3, Flames 1: Benoit Pouliot scored the game-winning goal with less than three minutes remaining, and the Oilers defeated the Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome.

Michael Frolik opened the scoring for the Flames in the first period, but Mark Letestu scored 48 seconds later to tie it for the Oilers.

Pouliot scored his game-winner at 17:08 of the third period. Justin Schultz scored an empty-net goal with eight seconds left to make it 3-1.

Matt Hendricks had two assists for the Oilers.

Ben Scrivens made 12 saves on 13 shots for Edmonton; Anders Nilsson made saves on all 17 shots he faced.

Joni Ortio made 11 saves on 12 shots for Calgary; Jonas Hiller made 15 saves and allowed one goal.

Capitals 2, Hurricanes 0: Tom Wilson broke a scoreless tie early in the third period and Braden Holtby made 14 saves in the Washington Capitals' win against the Carolina Hurricanes at Verizon Center.

Wilson scored 3:31 into the third to give Washington a lead it did not relinquish. Derek Roy scored an insurance goal at 13:11. Dan Ellis relieved Holtby midway through the game and made 12 saves to preserve the shutout.

Hurricanes goalie Eddie Lack played the first two periods and made 22 saves. Drew MacIntyre allowed two goals on nine shots.

Washington was 0-for-3 on the power play; Carolina was 0-for-2.

Maple Leafs 4, Senators 3 (OT): Joffrey Lupul's second goal of the game came 55 seconds into overtime to help the Toronto Maple Leafs defeat the Ottawa Senators at Canadian Tire Centre.

Shane Prince and Bobby Ryan scored for the Senators in the first period to give Ottawa a 2-0 lead. Erik Karlsson assisted on each.

Dion Phaneuf scored at 16:10 of the first period and TJ Brennan tied the game 2-2 at 5:47 of the second.

Karlsson's power-play goal at 11:53 of the second gave Ottawa a 3-2 lead before Lupul's goal 3:55 into the third period tied the game, 3-3. Lupul then scored in the first minute of overtime.

James Reimer started in goal for Toronto and made 21 saves on 24 shots; Garret Sparks entered the game in the third period and stopped all eight shots he faced.

Craig Anderson stopped 18 of 20 shots for the Senators; Matthew O'Connor made 15 saves on 17 shots.

Maple Leafs 4, Senators 1: PA Parenteau had two power-play goals to help the Maple Leafs defeat the Senators at Air Canada Centre.

Parenteau scored at 8:42 of the first period. Nick Spaling scored 31 seconds later to give the Maple Leafs a 2-0 lead after the first period.

Parenteau scored at 3:58 of the third period to make it 3-0.

Senators forward Mike Hoffman made it a one-goal game, scoring at 6:48, but Stuart Percy's goal with under four minutes remaining gave Toronto a 4-1 lead.

Andrew Hammond started for the Senators and stopped 16 of 18 shots; Chris Driedger made 19 saves on 21 shots.

Jonathan Bernier played the entire game for Toronto and made 28 saves.

Islanders 3, Flyers 2: John Tavares had a goal and an assist to help the New York Islanders defeat the Philadelphia Flyers at Barclays Center on Monday.

Tavares scored a power-play goal with 54 seconds remaining in the first period to give the Islanders a 1-0 lead.

Anders Lee scored a power-play goal to increase the lead to 2-0 at 3:25 of the second period. Tavares and defenseman Marek Zidlicky, who signed a one-year contract with the Islanders last week, got assists.

Kirill Petrov gave the Islanders a 3-0 lead. Scott Laughton and Taylor Leier scored for the Flyers.

Flyers 5, Islanders 3: Claude Giroux scored the game-winning goal for the Flyers against the Islanders at PPL Center in Allentown, Pa., on Monday.

Girioux's goal in the third period broke a 3-3 tie.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first period. Michael Raffl scored for the Flyers, and James Wright had the Islanders goal.

Travis Konecny and Vincent Lecavalier scored in the second period for Philadelphia. Alan Quine scored for New York, which trailed 3-2 after the second.

Islanders forward Justin Vaive scored to tie the game 3-3 in the third period. Pierre-Edouard Bellemare scored an empty-net goal with less than eight seconds remaining.

Penguins 1, Blue Jackets 0 (SO): Beau Bennett scored the only goal of the game in the third round of the shootout and Jeff Zatkoff made 23 saves in the Pittsburgh Penguins' win against the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena.

Blue Jackets goalie Joonas Korpisalo, a third-round pick (No. 62) at the 2012 NHL Draft, played the entire game and made 39 saves.

Penguins goalie Tristan Jarry relieved Zatkoff at the start of the third period and made seven saves. He denied Oliver Bjorkstrand, Alexander Wennberg and Ryan Murray in the shootout.

Pittsburgh was 0-for-5 on the power play; Columbus was 0-for-4.

Kings 5, Coyotes 1: Tyler Toffoli and Nick Shore each scored two goals to lead the Los Angeles Kings past the Arizona Coyotes at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield, Calif.

Jordan Weal and Shore scored power-play goals 21 seconds apart early in the first period to give Los Angeles a 2-0 lead. Toffoli and Shore put the Kings up by four goals when they scored 3:20 apart late in the second.

Toffoli's second goal of the game came shorthanded 39 seconds into the third period.

Anthony Duclair scored for Arizona at 4:08 of the third.

Toffoli scored again when the teams played in the new 3-on-3 overtime format after the game.
