Patrick Kane addresses media at training camp

Chicago Blackhawks right wing Patrick Kane reported to training camp Thursday and spoke publicly for the first time since being placed under investigation for an incident at his offseason home last month.

Kane reported with his teammates to the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., to begin training camp for the 2015-16 season.

Flanked by Blackhawks president John McDonough, general manager Stan Bowman and coach Joel Quenneville at a podium, Kane read a prepared statement:

"This has been an incredibly difficult time for many people. I cannot apologize enough for the distraction this has caused my family, my teammates, this incredible organization, and of course, our fans. While I have too much respect for the legal process to comment on an ongoing matter, I am confident, that once all the facts are brought to light, I will be absolved of having done anything wrong."

Kane, 26, is the subject of a police investigation and a grand jury in Hamburg, N.Y., a suburb of Buffalo.

McDonough made the following statement before Kane spoke:

"The Chicago Blackhawks organization prides itself in trying to make calculated and deliberate decisions based on information we have at the present time. We recognize that Patrick Kane is dealing with a very serious situation. Based on our discussions with his legal representatives, who are very close to the matter, we have decided to have Patrick join us for training camp here at the University of Notre Dame. Furthermore, we have the utmost respect for the legal process and will have no further comment on the issue at this time."

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly issued the following statement Thursday:

"We have remained in close contact with the Blackhawks' organization over the last seven days and, given the circumstances that exist now, we support the Club's decision in this situation."

Kane is expected to join his teammates for the first day of practice Friday at Notre Dame.

He won the Stanley Cup for the third time in June when Chicago defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games. Kane had 64 points in 61 games during the regular season and was tied for the scoring lead during the Stanley Cup Playoffs with 23 points in 23 games.
