Former Los Angeles Kings center Mike Richards, 30, has been charged with possession of a controlled substance while entering Canada, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said Thursday.
Richards, who is from Kenora, Ontario, is scheduled to make his initial court appearance Sept. 10. The RCMP provided no other updates.
The Kings terminated Richards' contract June 29, for a "material breach of the requirements of his contract." The NHL Players' Association filed a grievance over the termination of the contract on behalf of Richards on Aug. 10.
No date for that grievance, which would be contested before an independent arbitrator, has been set.
