Arizona Coyotes captain Shane Doan will be 39 years old shortly after the 2015-16 NHL season begins, and is entering the final year of a four-year contract, but said he hopes to play beyond this season.

"I'd like to have a good year. If I feel I can still help the team and they still want me, we can go from there," Doan, who has been the captain since the 2003-04 season, told FOX Sports Arizona on Wednesday. "I always want to approach it that way until I know I'm done."

Doan, who has played in the NHL for 19 seasons, all with the Coyotes franchise, played 79 games last season and finished with 14 goals and 36 points. He's played in 1,394 regular-season games and has 368 goals and 898 points. Doan has 15 goals and 28 points in 55 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

The Coyotes finished with the worst record in the Western Conference last season. They made several acquisitions this offseason, including signing free agent forwards Brad Richardson, Antoine Vermette and Steve Downie and goalie Anders Lindback.

"We made a lot of moves this summer, and all of them were for legitimate, really good NHL players," said Doan, the longest-tenured captain in the NHL. "I think it is everyone's goal again to put ourselves in a position where we can see good things happening."
