Former Maple Leafs defenseman Mortson dies at 90
Gus Mortson, who won the Stanley Cup four times with the Toronto Maple Leafs, died Saturday in Timmins, Ontario. He was 90.

Gus Mortson, who won the Stanley Cup four times with the Toronto Maple Leafs, died Saturday in Timmins, Ontario, his family said in a statement released by Miron-Wilson Funeral Home. He was 90.

Mortson, a defenseman, also played for the Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings during his 13-season NHL career. He was named to the NHL First All-Star Team in 1950 and played in the NHL All-Star Game eight times.

A native of New Liskeard, Ontario, Mortson earned the nickname "Old Hardrock" for his physical style of play; he led the NHL in penalty minutes four times. He and defenseman Jim Thomson formed the Maple Leafs' "Gold Dust Twins."

Mortson, who won the Cup in 1947, 1948, 1949 and 1951 with the Maple Leafs, had 46 goals and 152 assists in 797 regular-season NHL games.
