Canucks sign Brandon Sutter to five-year extension
The Vancouver Canucks have signed forward Brandon Sutter to a five-year, $21.875 contract extension.

Forward Brandon Sutter on Tuesday signed a five-year, $21.875 million contract extension with the Vancouver Canucks.

The contract has an average annual value of $4.375 million and runs through the 2020-21 NHL season.

Sutter, 26, was traded to the Canucks by the Pittsburgh Penguins on July 28 for forward Nick Bonino, defenseman Adam Clendening and a second-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft.

"I'm comfortable with [the term]," Vancouver general manager Jim Benning told The Province on Tuesday. "He's a solid two-way player and throughout his career he's been pretty resilient and hasn't had a lot of injuries."

Sutter had an NHL career high 21 goals with 12 assists in 80 games for Pittsburgh last season.

He was primarily a third-line center, one of the NHL's top penalty-killers, and solid on faceoffs.

"I'm not too concerned with my role," Sutter said after the trade. "I just want to do what is asked of me. I hope to play an increased role and it sounds like a good opportunity to be a second-line center."

The 11th pick of the 2007 NHL Draft by the Carolina Hurricanes has 98 goals and 87 assists in 495 games with Pittsburgh and Carolina. He has 12 points (eight goals) in 33 Stanley Cup Playoff games with the Penguins.

He will make $3.3 million this season, the final year of a two-year contract, according to war-on-ice.com.

"He's always played against top players in Pittsburgh and Carolina and has always been a matchup guy," Benning said. "He has a mature game and is always on the right side of the puck. ... He has speed to get in on the forecheck to get turnovers and fight for loose pucks and get them to the net.

"He's the type of player and has the type of game where he can play into his mid-30s and be an effective player."
