Bernier signs two-year contract with Maple Leafs
Goalie Jonathan Bernier signed a two-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday.

Goalie Jonathan Bernier signed a two-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday.

Financial terms were not released, but Sportsnet reported it is worth $8.3 million, an average annual value of $4.15 million.

"I was happy we were able to get a deal done," Bernier said in comments tweeted by the Maple Leafs. "Now I can focus on training camp and get ready for the season."

Bernier, 26, requested a one-year, $5.1 million contract; the Maple Leafs offered a one-year $2.89 million contract, according to Sportsnet. Bernier had a team-elected arbitration hearing Friday.

"It was good to hear what both parties had to say as far as Jonathan and where the team was at," general manager Lou Lamoriello said, according to the Maple Leafs. "We were able to come up with a fair situation for both Jonathan and the team. He is a National Hockey League goalie. He doesn't have to prove anything.

"He has the ability, there's no question. ... It's getting everybody (the whole team) going."

After finishing 15th in the Eastern Conference last season, the Maple Leafs hired Mike Babcock as coach and Lamoriello as general manager. Toronto traded forward Phil Kessel to the Pittsburgh Penguins for forwards Nick Spaling, Tyler Biggs and Kasperi Kapanen, defensemen Scott Harrington and Tim Erixon, and two conditional draft picks.

"We need to turn the page," Bernier said. "I think the guys are excited to come back and guys are motivated with the new coaching staff."

Bernier was 21-28-7 with a 2.87 goals-against average and a .912 save percentage in 58 games last season. He is 76-67-20 with a 2.63 GAA, a .916 save percentage and nine shutouts in seven seasons with the Maple Leafs and Los Angeles Kings. He was acquired from Los Angeles in 2013 in a trade for goalie Ben Scrivens and forward Matt Frattin, and is expected to enter this season as part of a goaltending tandem with James Reimer.

"I want to be part of the Maple Leafs and this rebuild," Bernier said. "I'm extremely excited for training camp with Mike and my new goalie coach [Steve Briere]. It should be a fun year."
